Missing a critical component in that breakdown. Cost of rebuilding an original block\heads side oiler from scratch. My guess is you could spend $20K or so doing that with a reputable engine master (Gessford, KC, etc.), or far less depending on what needs to be done. 'Depending on what needs to be done' is the KEY!

I rebuilt my side oiler for about $4K including machine shop work and custom pistons. I did the labor myself, it was more of a 'freshen up' as opposed to a serious 'from scratch' rebuild which might require extensive machine shop work in some cases. Thus, a protentially 'big dollar' build.

VERY satisfied running an 'original' side oiler complete with iron 1964 High Riser heads. But hey, thats just what I wanted to do. :D

I thought John was interested in the cost of a new complete Shelby engine. Thus, I provided Roush estimates and then commented on having the engine built by someone other than Roush.

For 38G it should come with a guy on a two year contract that goes out and polishes it for you each week...

Here's one with fuel injection. It looks nice, but it should for the price!

It's entirely logical to compare modern component prices to original FE prices in an instance such as this.

I don't have a pic right off, although I do somewhere. But the late Steve Brown, owner of an SPF, had a completely polished one...block,heads and intake (2-4s), you about needed sunglasses to look at it. He still has some pics in his gallery, if I can remember the name he used, I'm sure one is in there. I think his log in name was stephenC.

Where's the PCV on that engine? Doesn't even look like there's one in the back of the intake. Where would it run to if there was one?

The engine in the picture that stentor posted looks like an expensive piece of sculpture.... 9 pulleys... you would almost hate to bury that motor in an engine compartment.
I guess for the cost of such an engine it should be regarded as a desirable piece of art work and you would probably spend as much time polishing the thing as running it, all those gleaming surfaces equate to a lot of detailed elbow grease.
It certainly does look impressive, for the prices listed I would hope it performs sexual favors as well.

I agree--the motor and its price are a bit "over the top." The picture was sent to me by a Roush engine dealer (as I was inquiring about Roush's FE engines).

I went with a Shelby block, but I didn't go with Roush (nor did I spend $38k on my motor).:D

With the 2 breathers I would have to guess there is NO PCV. In order to run one another vacuum manifold would need to be made to plumb all the ports together for proper operation.

Wow. I don't know where some of the mis-information that is posted comes from but it makes for entertaining reading. Donovan 417,Amazing. Thanks to Ed Lefevre for setting the record straight. Roush chose the Shelby block on its merits. I.E. Quality of the casting, Block integrity and dimensional accuracy. It should be noted that Roush machines or used to, the Genisis block and still wouldn't buy them. This is what i've been told and i have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the statement. Enough said.
As far as complete engines are concerned, please contact me and mention this thread and i'll give you a great price on an engine up to 482 C.I.D.

I had an engine builder in CT build me a Shelby Alum block 427 engine for $17,000. It was bored to 462 and dynoed at 510 HP. :D
