Lot's of clues but only 1 sure way
Andy,
There are alot of small indicators to tell the difference in the various versions of the FE, but only one sure way - Measure the bore and stroke. If the bore is 4 1/4" (4.232 to be exact), it is a 427 If the bore is 4 1/8" (4.132), it probably is a 428 or could be 406. But be cautious, some smaller FE Blocks could be unscrupously modified to get to this bore. The smaller FE's have a 4 1/16" (4.050) bore. You'll read other threads about guys buying what they were told was a 427, only to learn it was a modified 360!! Once you know the cube's, the finer details will help you establish originality. Regarding the heritage of a given motor, they were not "serialized" so it is very difficult to tie to a given vehicle. Something to start you verification: If the sides of the blocks around the oil pans and motor mounts are IDENTICAL, be suspicious. The 427 has sidebolt main caps, the original 428 does not. Paul |
You can tell what you have from the casting codes.
There are various resources out there to help you decifer the casting codes. Here is one. http://www.aacncclub.com/ |

A sure way to tell is to look at the front of the block, far right side, almost even with the height of the oil filter adapter, approximately 3 inches in from the right edge of the block you will see either a 3/8" npt pipe plug or an unplugged hole. This hole was drilled into the "hump" on the side at the factory on SO blocks to open up the side oiling channels that were cast into the SO block. This hole should be plugged.
The shot below is from the lifter valley, you should see this stamped in the center of the valley. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...9442700051.JPG Look at the bottom of the block below the freeze plugs, you will see two silver plugs screwed into the "hump" that runs along the side of the block. That hump is an oil passage that is unique to a side oiler. Below that on the lower edge of the block you will see a couple of bolt heads screwed into the side of the block, those bolts secure the main bearing caps, commonly called 'cross bolted mains. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...3944270003.JPG |

amlsml,
c7AEA indicates a 67' 427 side oiler block. You should buy George Reid's book "High Performance Ford Engine Parts Interchange". You should be able to look up most of the casting codes using the code lists he has put together. |
