Help, Valve stem hight above valve spring?
Valve stem height above valve springs varies in height, Should the stems have been ground to match the lowest valve stem when heads where rebuilt? It is affecting the push rod length. 1964 427 block, 1964 FE cast iron heads. Comp Cam, Comp solid lifters (none roller) and Roller tip Rockers.

A good shop will set the depth of the valves on the seats as close as possible to each other and then cut the length of the respective stems so that when a machined straight edge is laid across the stems, they are all the same height. Otherwise, pushrod length (as you discovered) will vary considerably causing the valvetrain geometry difficulties.

Valve heights
When using non adjustable rockers this is a must but with the adjustable rockers if the stem heights are within about .020 it should not be a big problem. If you were going to turn the engine over 7000 rpms a lot with a big camshaft it would be a little more important. Good luck, Keith
