Original 427 Side Oiler Motor Mounts
I have what I believe is an original 67' 427 side oiler block. I am trying to mount it now and I have run into difficulties. The reproduction motor mounts for a "390-427-428" did not work. The passenger side insulator that bolts to the block needed to be modified due to slightly different bolt spacing on that side (off by about 3/8"). It looks like there is an oil gallery there which is why the bolts may be moved up but the lack of symmetry has me puzzled.
Then I ordered what was advertised as Factory Ford motor mounts for a "390-427-428" off of EBAY. I paid a pretty penny for them and they had the same situation. Does this sound right ? Also, as far as clearance go, it looks I have about 3/16" between headers and shok tower. Is this too tight ? Thanks in advance. |
Engine Mounts
I have stock engine mounts and the only change was that Shelby American radiused the lower corner of the LH mount to clear the side oil gallery. I have since purchased NOS mounts from a Ford dealer and just duplicated the radius and they fit perfectly. Do you have them facing in the correct direction and are they for the full size Ford? I am not sure if the Fairlane or Mustang mounts are different but I always ordered for a Galaxy.

Car quest part # 31-2141 late 50's FE powered Thunderbird. The C shape is open to the back. That's for the two bolt early mounts on the block later FE's used the four. Some blocks have both patterns.

Ford for whatever reason made mounts with different fore and back offsets. What car are you installing your engine in? The original 427 Cobras used the motor mount from a Merc Maruader. The part number cast into the rubber is C1MM.

Ford SO blocks have the front LH side lower bolt hole raised about 3/8" higher than a standard or CO FE Block. Genesis blocks (Aluminum at least) are an exact duplicate of the Ford SO RH bolt pattern. Apparently the Shelby blocks are the same as any non SO FE block.%/ I'm not sure about any others except these, although I am relying on a vendor’s statement on the Shelby block. I just went through this last year with the roadster mounts FFR provided and recently with Forte's new replacement FE poly mounts. Good luck finding a correct mount for the RH side. It is kind of like a '69 or '70 428 CJ Mustang fan clutch replacement, part number says it’s this, but it never fits....:JEKYLHYDE |
FE engine mounts
I have an original 1966 427 side oiler block and the engine mount bolt location appears to be the same left to right. The only modification that I know of was the lower corner has a radius on the LH mount instead of being square I have about 5 pairs of mounts that I have replaced over the years and they appear to be identical left to right at the block mounting plane.
Bolt spacing is 2.5" on both mounts, the original ones that came in the car were C1MM has Tom stated. The other mounts I have used were just full sized Ford FE mounts with the LH lower corner trimmed. These mounts have two bolts for the block and 1 stud for the frame mount. Ford probably gave Shelby The MM1 mounts because they had a bunch left over from poor Marauder sales and needed to "balance them out". |
Go measure them. They are not the same.

I just examined a Dec 67 SO Ford block that has the standard motor mount pattern on the LH side. The SO block I have is a Jan 66 and has the bolt hole located 3/8" higher in the block above the oil galley. Somewhere in this time span ford changed bolt hole location. %/ Please excuse my ignorance. :o |
