How much oil?????
 
All,

I am running a 427FE with a 9 qt Aviaid oil pan plus an oil cooler. Motor is stroked to 468 C.I.

I have been adding 9 quarts when I change the oil as the pan holds up to 9 qts, the oil cooler can hold between 1/2 to 1 qt, lines can hold another qt etc.

How many quarts of oil do you recommend using?

%/ Might consider filling with 9 quarts for the pan, 1 quart for the filter (or 2 if 2 filters), and another 1 quart for the oil cooler. Check the dipstick...if full, run engine to warm up...wait for oil to drain back to pan and check level again and add until the full mark if needed. 9If you check the dipstick before warm up the reading will probably be above full due to the oil not being in the filter/filters).

Aviaid rates their oil pans for static level in the pan. This is the quantity of oil that will fill the sump up to about the underside of the hard tray bolted into the pan. They recommend that the 1st time you fill the pan in the car, with the car flat on the ground and the pan empty, you add 1 quart less than the advertised number of quarts and mark the stick. Add 1 more quart and mark the stick again. This is a high-low marking procedure. Then start the engine and let everything pressurize and fill, shut the engine down, and let everything drain down for a few minutes. Then add oil to bring the level back to the top mark on the stick, noting how much oil is required to fill the pan back up to the top mark. The total of the added oil plus the initial fill will give you system capacity. This now includes lines, filter, cooler, whatever. From that point you can adjust level to suite your requirements. Some will run a little more, some a little less, depending on usage.

Most of that detailed answer is right from the Aviaid web site, but don't forget when changing your oil to fill up your filter. I'm always astounded that the big Moroso filter on my FE just sucks up an entire quart of oil, so you don't want to just screw it on your engine dry.;)
