Does anyone use anything special in their engine cooling system to protect the aluminum ? I have alumimun radiator, water pump and intake on my new build and was just curious what everyone was using for coolant.

Thanks,

Make sure you get a good brand antifreeze that says it is formulated for aluminum engine components AND use that along with distilled water. Do NOT use tap water!

I use a 50/50 mixture here in MA. I also have a spare gallon of the 50/50 mix so I can add some as/if needed.

I use Shell Rotella ELC. Buy it 50/50 mixed.

You should also run a zinc anode kit.

Several manufacturers sell Anti Corrosion additives. I lie the Dupont brand but sure they are all close. To confirm protection level there are litmus tests to check the PH levels to make sure.
Already given some other good recommendations by earlier posters. I second their ideas. distilled water and coolant with additives. The anode is Extra good.

I don't run coolant. Distilled water, water wetter and a can of lube/corrosion stuff.

Thanks for all of the input. On a related topic - I am starting to install the sending units in the engine. I am told that the "correct" way is to seal the threads with a conductive sealant. The problem is that none of the parts stores have this.

Is this overkill ? Will the gauge readings be compromised if I use teflon paste ?

If anyone has used a conductive sealant where did you get it ?

Thanks,

Just use the teflon paste. There will be metal to metal contact when you tighten the fitting.

Has anyone out there had any experience with the Evans brand waterless coolent? I have read quite a bit about it and they claim to reduce operating temperatures quite a bit. Like most product promotional ads, they make their product sound like the greatest thing since sliced bread. It also has all the anti corrosion additives included. The benefits they list sound like it would be far superior to a conventional water/antifreeze mix.

I think it sells for about $30 something a gallon and most Cobras would need about 4 gallons (use it straight-up) and with a 1 gallon flush, the cost to convert would be about $150 or so. Hopefully someone has some experience with it and will pass it on here.

Thanks, Obviously their url is evans.com

Do a search on it Bob. I know a few folks around here have tried Evans.

What kind of "Lube/corrosion stuff" do you use. I can't seem to find anything.

Couple questions for you experts.

I want to run all water and some kind of lube/anti-corrosive agent to keep my temps here in FLA below 212 on a regular basis with my aluminum radiator-heads-waterpump.

1- Royal purple's bottle says- "Do not use distilled water in an aluminum radiator" on their bottle. Why???

2- Isn't "Water Wetter" a lube/anti-corrosive for aluminum? It says it is on the label.

3- Hyper-lube says not to use in conjunction with other additives.

I guess my simple question is, what do I run in my coolant syatem if I want to run straight water and additives for anti-corrosion with NO anti-freeze, so I can keep my temps down about 20 degrees over the 50/50 mix with Water Wetter I am currently running?

Any and all answers and/or suggestion are more than welcome.

Dan

Yes... there really is no need to add a lube/corrosion additive when running distilled water and water wetter. Next time I drain it, I am going to skip the additional additive.
