side oiler starter noise
I have a 67 sideoiler. When the starter is engaged it make a screeching kind of noise as it starts the engine. It's a standard ford starter and I've tried another starter with the same results. The RAM billet alum. fly wheel was inspected with no damage showing to the ring gear. Any thoughts? Starter shims?

Since I've had no response I'll ask another question which will reveal my complete ignorance. Doesn't the Lakewood alignment have something to do with starter alignment? I've read that the bellhousing alignment is to insure that the ring gear doesn't contact the bellhousing. The starter screeches but turns the engine over. No obvious damage to ring gear or starter gear. I really want this fixed before installing the engine/tranny.

DU : The Bellhousing alignment is more to keep the input shaft on the trans concentric within a few thousandths of an inch with the centerline of the crankshaft after the transmission is bolted up, otherwise the transmission will do all sorts of strange things.

The main purpose of the bell housing alignment is to get 'dead center' the input shaft of the trans. Of course that would also impact flywheel clearance and starter alignment. While shims are typical on a GM product there seldom required on a Ford, relativly speaking. If the starter does not DISENGAGE smoothly after it's turned off that would indicate the starter gear teeth are 'to deep' into the ring gear teeth. But a 'screetch', hmmm, got me there. Standard issue Ford (like from NAPA) starters are reasonably priced, perhaps you could find/borrow one to test with? Heck, buy it, test it and take it back! :D

I guess I knew that too but how about starter alignment? Wouldn't the bellhousing affect that also?

Have you looked at the starter gear. Ihad one that had the teeth worn off on the front 1/8" of the gear and it would make that noise.

Sal the starter gear is OK, yet. The problem is that it only started the engine a few times and probably wouldn't show much wear.
I did buy a new starter from NAPA and will hook up a battery and see if it makes noise when starting the engine as it sits in the engine cradle. (Advice from a racing legend, and good friend Larry Burton.) |
I have a Lakewood scattershield on my 428, and it was close enough to use "as is", although I have had to dial in every other scattershield I have owned, both Lakewoods and McLeods. The FE flywheel is very large diameter compared to most engines, 184 teeth on the ring gear, while a SB Ford is normally either 157 or 164 teeth. Because of this, there is very little clearance between the flywheels teeth, and the inside of the scattershield. On my present 428, when I removed the scattershield, I noticed there was an area on the upper right section inside the scattershield where the ring gear had scraped against the inside of the scattershield. I never heard any noise, as I race the car, and it has no mufflers. The starter always turned the engine over just fine, & it sounds like yours does too, so maybe take a look inside your scattershield. If it has been scraping on the ring gear, a couple of minutes with a grinder should give enough clearance.
