428 SCJ build...suggestions
I have a 428 SCJ from a 69 Mustang drag pac car. This will be the power unit for my Cobra. HOW WOULD YOU BUILD THIS MOTOR? Here are the guidelines...I want around 500hp. The cam will be hydraulic. I have the Ford CJ aluminum intake/no carb. The tranny will be a C-6...at my age have to keep both hands on the steering wheel, haha.
I want to hear ideas on building this motor within the guidelines above, with parts, brands, person to build the motor, what does and doesn't work, etc. Thanks, Edatman |
Is this a REAL 428SCJ motor?
Edatman Before you mess with this motor, Is this an orignial SCJ motor from a Drag pack car?? If so, Hold it, where's the CAR? Anyway Go find a 390 motor in the junk yard or build one from scratch. You can build a windsor motor at about 2/3 the cost of an FE motor. There is TOO much info to talk about for this question. I am not trying to blow you off. If you are going racing, a 427 windsor will do the trick. You can buy a crate motor with a warranty for 2 years and have 500 hp and tork. You will not get this to the rear tires unless to go to 575 hp. This is more a race motor than street motor. You are looking at 8-10K for a windsor motor and about 18K and up for a PRO built FE motor. You can save about 30% by putting the motor together yourself if you have mechanic skills. You want to talk , call me in the evening. 732-254-3536 Rick L. I will try and point you in the right direction for your motor.

99.9% sure it's an SCJ
Hey Rick. Thanks for your reply. As far as I can tell the motor is a drag pac motor. It has the cap screw rods, right crank, and the larger harmonic bal. w/counter weight. The number stamped (not casting number) on the back of the block is a little strange to me. It starts 9F153...etc. I think this is different than most blocks I have seen. I have had the motor since '79 or '80. I have no idea what happened to the car. My friend that sold me this motor has a drag pac car but this motor doesn't match his car.
As to the cost of building it...I have one pro builder that says he can build it for $2500 to $3000, not including parts. I priced another $4000 in parts to build the motor (not running), including aluminum heads. I have looked at the create motors (385 series) from Ford and they can be had for a little more money. Somehow the FE just seems right for the car. I'll try to give you a call some evening when I can. Edatman |
The number stamped on the back of the block is a partial vin of the car it came from. I agree with Rick, save that motor, someone with that car really wants it.
I'd build a 428 / 427 FE for the car, but I wouldn't use the SCJ, save it for a resto guy. Chuck |
One of the guys at FordFE.com says it's definitely a '69 Mustang partial vin, built at the dearborn rouge assembly plant. He further suggests:
"He could start by submitting the VIN to Scott at http://www.428cobrajet.com to see if it is a reported CJ Mustang. If Scott can't help then Kevin Marti can provide a full report on the car that it came from. It can only be a '69 Mustang based on the partial VIN he provided." Hope that helps, Chuck |
428SCJ Rebuild
Edatman, Sell the 428SCJ motor to someone restoring a drag pack car for $$$$$$. I've got a 70 428 CJ, Eagle rods, TRW forged pistons, Edelbrock aluminum heads, Edelbrock intake, water pump, McCloud pressure plate, flywheel, Milodon road race pan. This engine is complete from pump to bell housing, carb to pan. It has 500 miles in my Kirkham 427SC. Removed it to install my 427 Sideoiler Tunnelport. Phil

options...always options
Hi Chuck and Phil. I hear what you are saying and if anyone with a 69 drag pac Mustang is missing the original engine and wants to send me their VIN number, I'll check it against the engine number. (wsmith6@cfl.rr.com) I have already done this for 2 people. I have had Shelbys and Mustangs since about 1976. I tend to favor the restored ones over the customized ones.
If the car this motor came from is still alive, I know the value will be greatly enhanced with the original motor back in it. I must say too, that I would be greatly surprised if it hasn't seen the bone yard years ago, knowing the guy I got it from. As for now, I am focused on the chassis and body of the Cobra, so the motor is in a holding pattern for a little while. Still gathering ideas and looking at options. Who knows, someone may make me an offer I can't refuse. ;) Thanks Wayne (edatman) |
428scj
I have 2 drag pack 69 mach 1 mustangs. One of them just has a 390. Neither car has a vin matching yours but I would be intrested if you are going to sell the engine. I do agree it is better to sell this engine and build a different one, not just because I would like the engine. The SCJ is externally balanced and that is weaker than an internally balanced engine. Also the after market blocks like the genesis are much stronger than stock blocks. Scat has good price stroker cranks. I bought a kit from A W Brown (586)549-7557 for my cobra. With aftermarket you could build a stronger and more powerful engine for around simmilar money. If you want to spend much less money and have good performance and the correct look of a 427 then biuld a 390. The one I have in my mustang I put in my cobra when I first got it together and it ran great and was fast enough to scare people I took for a ride.

Thanks for the advice Doc. Optional ideas are always nice.
