My FE has arrived :)

I know it's GT40 bound but my FE had been delivered from Huddart Engines in the UK :)

Slightly over the spec I originally went for, but no complaints from this end :D

Where Did You Get The Replacement Baldy Valve Covers? How Much $

1966plus 10-05-2007 01:39 PM

They came from Dennis Carpenter over there in the USA (C3AZ-6582-PR) cost was $130US + shipping.

My FE is set up for crank breathing through the (currently) capped adaptor in the rear of the intake manifold.

Keep us updated.
What is the cubic inches or liters if you prefer?:D
1973, is that a 390 block?

496fe 10-05-2007 07:40 PM

Sorry man, that's a Performer manifold. Love the dry sump oiling though.

496fe 10-05-2007 07:48 PM

Will the roller rockers fit inside the baldy valve covers?

1966plus 10-05-2007 11:12 PM

Hi,
yep I believe it was a 390 block. The build up spec did vary a little from the initial one supplied from Huddart's, you are quite right, it is a Performer manifold, the volume I have been informed is 454ci :). To build up with a 427so over here would probably add another $2000 or so :( The carb going on is a new Holley 750cfm 4150hp unit.

The baldy units shouldn't have a problem as the covers currently on there are quite low profile as well, but if there is a problem there are spacer kits available to give me the room I need.

This is the header system that will be going onto it (bear in mind it is a GT40 one so goes up rather than down :) ) The photo was taken with the system mocked up on an old engine just the photo over in the US.

2" primaries, crossover (where applicable) and then 3" back from the collectors

Do you have absolutely any clue how cool an FE sounds with 180-degree headers? When you get it running, I would like to fly over there just to hear it go. Let us know when it's running.

All the other boys in the school yard are going to hate you!;)

I am with Brian about the sound.

What transaxle are you going with?

1966plus 10-06-2007 05:24 AM

Thanks for the comments re the noise/music that this will turn out. I can't wait to get it fired up. A few months away at present though. I will be sure to post a sound clip for you though :)

I am running with a Porsche 911 turbo transaxle (930 4 speed), as this should be able to hang on the torque, and as I am building a Mk.II has the correct number of gears. The only mods to will be to add returns for a pump to keep everything nice and cool back thee. Sadly the original T44 axle is out of my league at the moment. :(

One step closer

well finally we have got the engine, transaxle and headers into the back of an MDA series II chassis :) (well OK it is an engineering frame of one - but the one they use for testing new configurations and parts)

The Big Guns:)

After a change of plans (brought about by both myself and MDA not realising the 930 clutch uses a pull system rather than a push one :o ) there will be a pull arrangement engineered for the clutch which will stop be using a Hydraulic Release Bearing (to keep things neat) :(

That's looking sharp! Since I'm ignorant when it comes to Porsches, did you have to invert the transaxle? If so what mods are necessary to keep it functioning?

Steve

1966plus 02-24-2008 08:04 AM

Hi Steve,
yes the Porsche box needs to be inverted to run in a 40.

As they are normally mounted infront of their engines when in Porsche, putting it behind mine and inverted keeps all the gears going the right way. There are no oiling problems with inverting the box either, I will be running a pump and cooler though to keep the temps down.

convincor 02-24-2008 04:40 PM

Glad to see a FE going in a 40. Every other build I see runs a SB..
Can't wait to here it.:D:D
