Don Dons cobra I thought had a solid rear
 

Tom Kirkham I will call on the pulleys. I thought that Don Nicolsons cobra had a solid rear axle. I was looking at it at a Carlisle show for the Ford event couple of years ago. I thought it was a 9". Rumor has it that one was running the Olds rear in one. If I was going to drag race a cobra, a 9" solid is the only way I would go anyway. RickL.

Jerry Clayton Jerry 2 companies sold them. 1st was PSE, simple setup with the springs between 2 90 degree aluminium plates that where screwed into the block between lifter bores. He had a kit for roller lifters(solid) that had square pushrods so they couldn't twist or turn. There was guides that had to be machined to fit. Isky was the other. I think this one was for solid lifters only. Still the same basic lay out, the spring went into the top of the lifter and there is a top plate that holds the top of the spring in a groove. There was a kit on e-bay back in march for sale, brand new. Went for big bucks. If you where going to run the dodge BB lifters, .904" bore I am sure you could rig up a kit. to work. Someone have come out with a grooved lifter and little balls that keep the roller from turning or twisting. You have to put a groove in the lifter bore for this to work. I don't have the number for the springs on the hemi, They where Crane triples that where custom that the guy at Auto King put on the motor when it was rebuilt and head work done. No valve float but hard on the valve train and adjustments after every run. Motor got a new cam and roller lifter twice a year. The Racer Brown cam was bigger that the 444 cam. If you go and fine them, back in the early 80's they only had 4-5 cams for the hemi in a solid lifter. Ray Barton is at the top of the Hemi food chain in my opinion. There is a Cigar smoken old guy that stills makes a hemi fly, I think the heavy set guy's name is Dick Landy, he's not a bad tuner either. He twice help work on the tune of Larry's car back in the 81 or 82 days at E-town. Nice guy back in the days when money was not as important and help others. I was not there for either of these races but his car was signed by Dick on the dash. Rick L. Give me a number to call at we can talk and do theory thoughts on each other. Back then we where looking at a set of dual plug heads, but didn't have the money for them with the dual distributor. The guy also had a rat roaster manifold too. 4K$ took the whole thing, There was a 10-15 hp differents by just having the spark plug on the other side of the valves and indexed. What is that worth today. Iron manifolds I sold in 94 for 1K$ they where originials in great shape. That Hooker headers comps on the car and a 22" extensioning pipe to them for the best power on that motor. Thrust mufflers for the exhaust when on the street and 2 9/16" wrenches for street racing. Those where the days. Even the cobra doesnot leave like the Roadrunner on slicks. Rick L.

I wonder if THIS is the Cobra that started the solid rear axle rumor? Took me a couple of days to find the picture. Note this car still has the SPINNER holding the wheels on!

Larsons Cobra was at Carlisle Ford Show
 

Bruce Larson's car was at Carlisle Show a couple of years ago. He was there signing autographs. He was not to talkative. I have pictures of the bottom back of the car. I think there was an IRS setup with 4.86 gears. He did say something about a solid rear in one of the cars. It was either a ford 9" or and olds rear old style. I will look for the photos. Rick L.
