FE Head Gaskets
Has anyone used the " Cometic " brand head gasket in their 427 engine ?
This is a Viton coated 3 layer S.S. gasket. Looks like a good design , but expensive. Looking for long term durabiity on a 427 S.S. iron block / Dove aluminum head engine. ( 10.1 comperssion ) Thanks Dave |
Dave, I've just finished "working" on my motor and one of the jobs was to replace the head gasket. I used Cometic gaskets thanks to advice from Keith Craft. I was trying to reduce compression on a 351C from 11.5:1. Went with an .080 thick gasket from Cometic. It went together well and seems to be working great. The extra thickness seems to have reduced compression to about 10.7:1. Just finished a 500 mile run to Laughlin and back without incident. I believe that these are worth the money.

Dan, Thanks for the feedback.
I have used FelPro and steel shim in the past, but came across the Cometic recently. Anyone else with experience withe the Cometic ? Dave |
I use them on my Cammer. No problems so far. They'll make them in any thickness and bore size within reason.

Cometic has been around a while with gaskets for bikes and some Foreign machinery. They started making HP gaskets for american V8 engines within the last 15 years or so. They have a pretty good reputation with the 5.0 crowd where, I believe, they initially ventured. I have used them in all types of engines, although not in any FEs. I have had no problems. Many of these were engines of aluminum or a combination of materials.

I am running them on my 427 and to be honest with you I am not sure they are any better than my FelPro gaskets. I have had them on my car for about six months now. They cost more!

What kid of money are you guys talking about for a set?

Supervee, if you want a real expert opinion, check with Keith Craft. He is the one who recommended them to me.

Lineslinger,
The list price I have seen is $98 each. ( i.e. $200 a set )I am not sure of discounted price. I will check with Keith Kraft as recommended. A local engine builder recommended them as well, but I had never seen this particular design. I had some special issues on one one deck of my S.O. that would cause a FelPro to blow in about 10 minutes running ( not the gasket fault ). But I have run a steel shim gasket for 12 years - no issue. I am in the process of freshening up the engine ( and I will also correct the block issue ) , and would like to use the best head gaskets.
