erson rocker assbly question
 
i just received my erson rockers assbly and i purchased the stud kit also, i dont have my heads yet but i have a question?. the studs came with a black washer and the erson kit came with little silver washers wich do you use and why?. any info would be appreciated.

I had a set of those once...I'd go with whatever washer appears to be higher quality. The rockers will be adjusted so any differences in thickness will be negated once bolted down.

Use the washers that came with the rocker arms. I believe they are smaller in diameter. If you use washers that are too large, they will hang out over the sides of the rocker arm pedestals and interfere with the adjacent rocker arms.

how does the oil get fed to the rockers and shafts?. i noticed the studs i received are solid.

Here is a thread http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/show...light=oil+mods that shows you the suggested oiling mods to the FE heads. About half way down in the thread it shows a nice shot of the restrictor passage (with a drill bit stuck in it so you can see it better) -- that's where your oil comes from. You will probably want to restrict that passage. Depending on a variety of factors, that will probably be in the range of .060 to .090. My Edelbrock heads with a solid flat tappet cam and with Ersons use .060 with the HV Melling pump and Canton pan -- others go a bit a bit higher than 60; it all depends on your setup. There's plenty of discussion on this and it makes for good reading.

so does the oil go through the pedestal block s to feed the rockers?, i will have to take another look at the assbly tonight. i did get oil restrictors from doug at precision oil pumps. do the different vendors open the oil return s if you buy there heads?

Here is a shot of Crane's rocker setup disassembled http://www.cranecams.com/images/down...%20347901).jpg -- it's not Erson but it will help you visualize how the oil travels to the valve train components. Different vendors will provide different levels of head work. "Right out of the box" I don't believe any of the return oils are even touched; certainly not Edelbrock, maybe the new BT MR heads, but I have yet to see them "in real life." Several of the studs should be undercut....that's what lets oil get through.

Running Edelbrocks out of the box, Erson rollers and ARP studs. .090 restrictors and there's plenty of oil getting up top. The ARP studs have a smaller O.D. in the middle than in the threaded area. Don't see a need for undercut. Use the small washers that came with the rockers.

New E'brock heads and oil return mods
 
Do the new Edelbrock heads have the modifications mentioned in the 09/2004 post from Luke-44?

I just got a set for my stroked 390 FE and don't have anything to compare with to see if the mods are done or, if not, that I need to do them.

I will be using a set of Harland Sharp roller rockers on the heads and would also like to know if I need to restrict oil flow to the rockers with that mod as well.

Has anyone done this and can comment?

I believe all Edelbrock heads require a little bit of work to allow the oil to drain back a little faster. It really isn't much work to do and doesn't require overly specialized tools.

HS is high quality stuff -- and yes, I would restrict the flow to the top. But remember, the most important part of your oiling system is your oil pan. If you run an OEM pan with a HV pump on your build you're risking the life of your engine. Here's a nice shot of the HS setup.

Clearance of the washers
 
wrench 87 The washers ( silver ) that come with the rocker assemblies are for stub kits where the black washers from ARP, rub against the rockers. The black washers spread out the torque of the nut over a wider area than the silver ones. This helps with Aluminium parts and cuts down on the groove marks on the mounting surface. As far as the oiling system I run .080 holley jets in my motor. You still need to keep the valve spring in oil to control the heat they make. .080 Holley jet just makes it in keeping the springs wet. I also believe in over filling the motor 1 quart of oil when driving. IMO. Make sure that the intake gasket holes for the oil return are CLEAR. Some cover up as much as 40% of the holes. This will cause the oil to have to return through the pushrod holes and take longer to get in the pan. Polish the return holes and smooth out the ports. On convincor head picture, IMO he went too close to the edge of the head on picture 2 and may have a sealing or oil leak problem. 1/8" edge is needed for a good sealing surface. On Aluminium parts for opening up ports or drains, I use only sand rolls, a grinding bit can get away from you and you grind off more than you wanted. IMO Rick L.
