Need Help Id'ing 428 intake

I am buying what I am pretty sure is a 66 428 PI with a c6 tranny but there are a couple of things that puzzle me.
First of all I don't think the valve covers have even been off this thing, they still have the old cork gaskets and little staples over the tabs like I remember on original fe's. This drive train has been in a 56 ford parklane since 1974 and not hooked up or started. It was stored inside and looks very original and unmolested.
The block casting is C6ME-A,the heads have NO visable numbers like an fe normally does. The intake is aluminum,4bbl and painted blue like the rest of the motor ,casting numbers are C6AE-9424-E.The air cleaner is a normal blue snouted one with a 428 4v original looking decal.
Here is what baffles me,it has painted pent roof style valve covers with a pvc valve.

AGAIN,this all looks like it has never been apart or molested. The story is this guys Dad bought the whole deal {motor/Tranny}from a salvage yard in 73 and never finished the car.
Anyone have any real info on what the intake is or what kind of 428 had pent roofs ?
thanks,Tk

Tk
Does it look like this (with the carb pad obiously higher than the VC rail edge)

Or is the carb pad at about the same height as the VC rail? I couldn't find that specific casting # but I'm far from an expert.

The C6AE-E in aluminum is a '66-'67 Medium Riser 427 part. Oddly enough, the 390Gt intake from '66-'68 carries the same number, but is made of iron. Port sizes are different as well, with the 427 part having 1.24 x 1.94 and the 390 1.16 x 1.94. Both carry the same basic part number of 9424 of course.

I suppose if it is a 427 intake that explains the pentroof covers .Now I wonder even more about the heads which have no normal casting numbers but have the square FoMoCo logo I think between the 1 and 2 exhaust port.
I suppose the only way to find out what this is is buy it.For 650.00 I suppose I can't go too wrong.
thanks for the help,Tim K

Look at the damper the 428 is externally balanced.

I admit to feeling a bit stupid on this one. I did think to try and look but since it is in a car it was very tough to see. I did feel for any clues to being externally balanced but truthfully am not sure what feature would determine that point.
Are you saying if the pulley is not integral to the balancer it is a 428 ?
thanks,Tim

The pulley wont tell you if its internally or externally balanced or if its a 428. All FE's have neutral balanced balancers.

The difference between those two balancers pictured is pre-67 and 68+. Early versions had an integral pulley, but they are interchangable.

If you can see the flexplate (flywheel) that should tell you if its a 428, assuming its the correct one for the motor, or if you can pull the pan. It will have a distinct counterweight on the flywheel on one side.

Only other option is to measure stroke through the spark plug hole

[quote=map;822832]Look at the damper the 428 is externally balanced.

You actually are just showing an early and late harmonic balancer. All the external weight is added at the flywheel not the harmonic balncer. They are interchangeable as far as balance. The SCJ had a "hatchet" weight behind the balancer to compenstae for the added weight of the capscrew rods, but all other 428s have a neutral balnce harmonic balncer with the weight on the other end.

I see I should have read through all the posts, my427stang already stated the same.

The acid test is measuring the stroke . If it's a 428 it will have a 3.98" stroke. 427,406,390, will have 3.78" stroke 352 has a 3.50" stroke. Who would try to pass a 427 off as a 428? The heads are a big part of the value. There are special heads in each engine combination that made them produce.

Thanks for the help. I am failry sure it is a 390 or 428. I still lean toward 428 I suppose because of the air cleaner which seems to match the patina of the rest of it. I think I can rule out an ft motor since it has a regular crank and distributor. I don't know of any one who was doing the ft conversions in the 70's.
The engine starts and runs although I havent heard it yet and comes with an attached c6ae date coded c6 for 650.00. I suppose I have done stupider things than buy this .
I think the intake and valved covers will bring close to that much if the engine turns out to be a hack job.
Thanks again for the help. Tim K

PS 427sharpe,what was your reference on the C6AE-E intake ?

"Ford High Performance Parts Identifier" by Robert Winkelman, published by Sunset Mustang in 1988. I bought it years ago because of its size. About 3.5 x 5.5 and 88 pages. Perfect for carrying in your pocket to junk yards or swap meets to separate the wheat from the chaff. I have never heard of Sunset Mustang, but in the title page the address listed is 7846 Chase Woods Dr.; Jonesboro, GA 30236. I must have bought it from National Parts Depot or Cobra Restorers when I lived in that part of the country.
