McLeod Starter Install
I'm just about to install a McLeod Hy-Tork mini starter on my FE and I would like to know if there are any special considerations or measurements I should take e.g. the starter comes with various shims and spacers, but no instructions on what to do with them.
I looked on the McLeod website, but couldn't even find any reference to the starters, let alone install instructions. Thanks in advance. Paul |
They are there to shim the starter out from it's mounts to get proper clearance/engagement of the starter gear and flywheel gear.
If shimmed too far out you won't have full mesh of the gear teeth and will result in premature failure of the ring gear. |
How much overlap should there be when fully engaged?
What if I need more engagement rather than less? Thanks, Paul |
Paul,
I never used a McLeod started but I had a special gear drive one made for my car and what I did was take the original starter and lay them side by side and then run the pinion gear out on both to see if they were the same distance. In my case they were an exact match so I had to do no shims or anything. Ron |
