FE Head indentification help please
As I stated in a previous thread I bought what I thought was a set of c6ae-r heads. I just took them out of the boxes they came in.
One says c6ae-r, the other says c6ae 8080R the last two sets of numbers are in an upside down v pattern in the middle of the head by the plug holes. Are these not a matching set. I bought these on the pretense that they were... Thanks for the help. |
Are you sure they are not C6AE-6090R? Do you see a date code? Should be near the middle of head between a couple of the guides, and would have some number like '6E19', which would be 1966 May 19.

One of them can be c6ae-6090r...it's hard to read the numbers...I went back and forth on 8090 R as well. the other is clearly c6ae-r...

The 6090 means it was cast as a cylinder head. I do not think there was much change among the C6AE-Rs, I think they were '66 352 heads. Several FE guys swear by them that they are the poor man's version of the 427 heads with close to the same ports and runners. They have 72-74 cc chambers. I would look at the dates to see if they were 'matching'. Should start with a 6, which would designate 1966. The second should be a letter, A=January, B=February, etc., and the next numbers would be the day of that month. If they fall within a week or so, I guess you could call them 'matching'.

Between the center 2 valve springs you'll see the date code. Number/letter/number sequence. First number is the year ending ex 6=66, 7=67. Next the letter is the month cast. A-M= Jan-Dec skipping the letter "I". So A for Jan, B for Feb, C for March and so on. Last number or 2 are the day of the month they were cast. By reading the date codes you can tell if they are close in date and a matching set. There are 2 types of C6-R head castings. Some have a large R on one end. It's does sounds like they might be a mis matched set. C6AE-6090-R as posted is the full casting number.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'll check the date codes and see what I have.

ok, one date is 6b26, the other is either 6d13 or 6b13, can't really tell.
Anyone know the difference between the c6ae-r and the "regular" c6ae...can they be mixed? They look absolutely identical...is there anything I can mic that will tell me the difference if any? |
66/Feb/26 and 66/Feb/13 or if it's a D 66/April/13. There were some subtle differences. On the exhaust port some have a inner vertical "lip" around the right side of the port and some don't. Both big and small R heads have the lip at the top of the exhaust ports tho. All were cast themactor humps. Some were cast at the Cleveland foundry and some the Dearborn foundry. I remember reading somewhere the vertical lip on some was for the Fairlane applications exhaust for a little extra "meat" on the port surface. If the date codes are both B's I'm sure they are a matching set. Heads were heads and I'm sure while picking them off a pile for assy guys weren't looking at the minor casting differences in all cases. I'm sure they'll be just fine as is.

I just took the heads off my 390 and found that they were mis-matched as well. I went to the George Reid book and found that, although the date code on one was 1963 and the other was 1965, they were identical in volume and valve size. There was, however, a slight difference in port size in the book. The '63 head had .06" larger port width on the exhaust. When I measured the heads, they were identical so someone equalized the exhaust port sizes.
Your C6AE-R head should be 71 - 74 CC, Valves: 2.02In, 1.55Ex, Ports: 2.34" x 1.34"Intake, 1.84" x 1.34"Exhaust. Measure the other one and see if it matches. My bet is, it will. The book says the C6AE-R head was made in 66-67 for 352ci engines, although that doesn't seem to matter much as the same dimensions were on 352-390-410-428 engines. I'm sure that is clear as mud since identifying Ford parts from their cast-in numbers can be sometimes confusing. I've found that the guys on the FordFe.forum can help a lot with identifications such as this. FWIW. Paul |
Cobrajam, correct on the 66 352, I have a bare set waiting for the shop.
