FE primer shaft?
 
HI,

What do you guys use for a shaft to prime an FE?

Pull the distributor and use a 3/8 socket (I think) on the end of a long extension and spin counter clockwise with your drill. Turn your key on and you should get the oil pressure gauge moving.

Make sure you tape the socket onto the extension with several wraps. You do not want it drop off....ouch.

Just remove the gear from an old FE distributor/shaft- ( Or SBF289/302- they use same size hex to drive oil pump ), weld a nut on top & get busy anti- clockwise with a speed brace, or battery drill in reverse.

1. 5/16 Hex shafting material, cut to length so it extends approximately as high as the body of the distributor (if it were installed). Then attach a variable speed reversable or a cordless drill tightly.

OR

2. If you have an old FE distributor you can remove the base plate inside that the points are attached to and remove the cam that the points rub on and then the fly weights, leaving the central shaft that the drill can be attached to, then remove the cam gear and have at it.

FE is 1/4" Hex------ NOT 5/16".

If you're using an ARP oil pump drive, it is 5/16".

Blykins, Im a bit mystified about your 5/16" FE drive- ARP only list one & its 1/4" hex, plus in order to convert to 5/16" the pump gears plus Dist shaft would need to be upgraded as well along with possibly enlarging the spigot in the block to accept the larger dist shaft dia @ that point. Not doubting your info, just interested as its something I have considered doing to the odd FE & useing a shortened 429/460 drive when I know the customer is going to break all the rules & jazz the throttle when the oil is still cold.

Jac, I thought for sure my 428 was an ARP 5/16" drive shaft. I could very well be mistaken and I'll check on it.

I do know that I bought a primer for a SBF a couple of months back and it wouldn't fit down over the ARP shaft for my 445W. I had to use a socket and extension instead. I was assuming that the FE stuff was the same way.

I'll see what I can find out.

I checked Jegs for the ARP FE shaft. Part number ARP #070-154-7902 says "ARP had designed a larger diameter heavy-duty shaft that will provide you with the necessary reliability." Now that may be a larger diameter shaft with smaller ends, but that's seems counterproductive from an engineering standpoint.

It does seem odd, but that's exactly what it is. Otherwise you'd need a different distributor and oil pump.

It does help in torsional strength over the length of the shaft, and theoretically the smooth surface of the majority of the shaft "could" be less vulnerable to stress cracks but that part is really reaching.

I personally have never broken a Ford oil pump drive on anything that wasnt caused by some other failure. However, I do also run an oversized one from Doug Garifo on my 489. The 427 before it and the 390 in my F-100, as well as most any other one I build, I just use a good Melling driveshaft though
