Oil in the exhaust??

I have a 427 FE center oiler with Edelbrock aluminum heads. I recently developed a problem: some oil smoke out of the driver side sidepipe, but more importantly, a fair amount of raw oil in the pipe and blowing out of the pipe. The amount of raw oil is significant. Through some investigation it appears to be from cylinder #6. To the best of my abilities, I do not believe it is a failed valve seal, nor do I think it to be a failed or broken ring (leak down test showed no abnormality and visual inspection of the seal looks good). Considering the amount of oil and the fact that not all is getting burned up, I have come to one conclusion that I would like feedback on. I think that there must be a failure/crack in the head from the pressurized oil channel going to the rockers to the intake of #6. It is the only place where there is oil close to the intake or exhaust for that matter. It could explain the raw oil getting into the chamber during the exhaust stroke and getting blown out the pipe without getting burned.

Any thoughts???????????????

What about a possible failure of the head gasket adjacent to the oil passage. (Sounds better than a cracked head?) Keep your fingers crossed.

failed intake gasket too... It will suck a boat load on oil on the intake stroke.

I'd bet on the intake gasket

Is the head stock or has it had a lot of work done on it. I hope it is just a gasket also but a friend of mine had that same problem after he changed heads to a set that had a lot of work done on them and one head was cracked. It poured oil out the exaust like you were pouring it out of the can. Again, hope it is just a gasket.

Had the same symptoms coming out of No.6....blue smoke and oil in the exhaust. Did the leakdown, compression, all good. Was a slipped intake manifold gasket on that cylinder only. All is well now. We'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

I had a porus intake port that would suck oil from the pushrod tube into the intake manifold.

If you are running a PCV valve from the rear of the intake manifold, check to see if oil is being sucked in. This happened to me.

If you have Edelbrock heads on your FE you may get smokey exhaust. Just heard from a great engine builder that the valve guides are to large. You may need to disassemble Intake valves and press in new guides. Aluminum block had only 50 miles on it. Going to the dyno shop soon, but all that was done on head was lapping. New gaskets were installed then we heard the news. Cross your fingers. Alot of labor for a new manufactured component. Never had a problem like this from them in 20 years. Hoping just a manufacturing problem. One or two bad ones I hope. If you have similar issues, post it please. This is how we all save customer headaches and our own craziness. Also, gasket quality is a must! Cometic head gaskets, Fel-Pro high performance gaskets, and Clevite High performance bearings. Good Luck

Have also seen instances where the bolt attaching rocker gear to cyl head at the point where oil feed is supplied can be too long and crack or break thru into the inlet port, one large oil leak!

Thanks guys for all the input. Have Weber carbs so I was able to remove the carbs on that side and check the intake runners directly right to the valve backs. Ran oil pressure up and found no leaks into the intakes. The valve areas and valve stems and backs are clean of new oil. Visibly checked with a boroscope. Next step is to take off exhaust headers, look in to determine the cylinder of merit and then remove the intake. I'll carefully check intake gasket. If not there, then remove the head to check head gasket and better inspect the head. At this time I cna also check piston.

Got to love this big block. 2nd mysterious oil problem. Oh well - it is still a fun hobby.:JEKYLHYDE**)

what intake gaskets you use. Printo-seals? They probably look like this-

Pull a valve cover and look for a wavey gasket like this-

Here's a old thread similar problem
