I'm building a Genesis block 482. What would you recomend for a balancer
Should I use the factory one? Is it worth it to buy an aftermarket? I have seen them on ebay fro 65-225. What is the difference
thanks chris |
Chris, I've been looking at the very same thing. From what I've seen I won't be using a factory one at any rate and mine is just a stroker 428PI. Of those that are available on ebay and elswhere the big difference seems to be RPM capability and SFI rating. Even though I'll probably never spin mine over 5.5k, I think I'll stick with the SFI part for piece of mind if nothing else. Who knows maybe I'll get froggy!:D
For the record, I'd love to hear some opinions of the builders that we have on this forum. Steve |
Chris , I have a 428 FE that I just had built and I learned that some of the Balancer companies out there will tell you that theres will fit a FE, BUT the bolt pattern for the pullets will not !!!
I called my manufacture and said I must have the wrong one because my pulleys would not bolt up the pattern was wrong. They said no, they make everyone they sell to have the Chevrolet bolt pattern and I would have to buy a new pulley for a Chevrolet. I asked where does it say that on there box or in there adds ? That just the way it is, was his answer. So ask first if it will fit a FORD and not a Chevrolet . |
BHJ makes a nice one, the ford stuff will bolt up, and theirs is SFI rated.
i think KC sells them still. i have one on my 427, do watch the factory ones they are old, the rubber dries out. if it fails it will go right thru your fender. dont cheap out on this item, verify timing marks on install and use the correct pointer all fe pointers are not the same |
I use Professional Products quite a bit. Their stuff fits well and looks good. They have the timing marks clearly and boldly marked and the FE balancers come with a front pulley. You can get them in regular flavor or in SFI. Very affordable.

Keith Craft put a Professional Products one on my 482.
He's got them on his website. They're a 7.5 FE Zero balance dampner. Part # 90009 It's the: Ford Powerforce+Plus SFI Harmonic Dampers http://keithcraft.com/vp500/shopdisp...ional+Products PP also has them and here's a link to their website. http://www.professional-products.com...ductBBford.php Dan |
I've got a Professional Products on my 482/Shelby block.
|
I've seen warnings from Scat and one other crankshaft mfgr. not to use the fluid filled dampers as they cause the snout to crack and sheer off. The FE as well as other engines with fuel pump eccentrics on the timing gear have very long snouts unlike the Chevy engines so it's vulnerable to stress cracks. The fluid dampers get out of balance and actually amplify the vibrations instead of absorbing them.
If your planning on tracking the car this item must be SFI certified. |
I have a Romac on my 427. A bit pricey but very high quality and it has an aluminum hub to save a little weight as well.

Where did you buy the Romac? How much?
|
ATI Damper on my FE...expensive, but worth it.
|
My machinist used Romac and Rollmaster parts and he got it for me back then.
Here is their US website: http://rollmasterusa.com/ Their timing sets are also very high quality. Here is the Austrailian site which has a list of US distributors as well: http://www.romac.com.au/ Hope this helps. Quote:

Fluid Damper is the one I use. Not cheap but definately bette than one from the big 3.
|
I think that every broken crank that I have seen in the last 15 years had a fluid dampner. we like the ati and the bolt pattern isn't a big thing--just need to oval the bolt holes a little to match the ford pattern or use a chev pulley

cobranut- I'm curious about the prices for the chain/gears and the balancer ?
|
I built my motor 9 years ago so I really don't remember. I just know they weren't the bargain basement units, then again, nothing in my motor was chosen based on price.
Just contact some of the US distrbutors for prices. Quote:

I have an SFI rated, fluid-filled aluminum balancer from Innovators West on the motor for 10 years. Many FE drag guys use it. Beautiful piece with full degree markings. Sees 6800 RPM regularly and been to 7000. Perfect bolt on with ARP bolt and March pulley.
No blow-up, broke part stories. It can be rebuilt and refilled by Art and is pricey. |
