stainless steel exhaust
Is anyone using stainless steel side pipes..pros and con's..how's the sound and is there a difference in the noise level?

Jon,
I had them on my Cobra which I sold a couple of years ago and never had any problems at all. I do believe they were a tad louder than the regular pipes though as I had an inner diameter of 4". Not sure that extra size made the difference, but when I was among 6 or 7 other Cobras, you could hear mine above them and I had long exhaust baffles in each pipe. And they seemed to stay hot a little longer than the others too. Ron |
I agree with Ron. The SS are a bit louder and will discolor although I think you can polish them periodically. At the time I got mine I ordered SS but then the sales guy called me and talked me into the steel which I had ceramic coded. I do like the SS better but can live with mine.

Stainless does have a different sound. I like it personally. It does hold heat a little better as it reflects it in, also good for an exhaust system. By the time you've shelled out for coating steel I'll bet the price is pretty comparable too. Biggest sales pitch, it's forever!

I'm running stainless. different (deeper) sound than stock pipes or when I had lobaks. Engine tune is important to keep the pipes from turning quickly.
I run for the season and they just turn a little gold up front. Not great videos but you can here the deeper tone with the stainless vs factory pipes with glass packs replaced with Lobaks. This is after about 2 months http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m.../grille_02.jpg click on pic for Lobaks http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...h_100_0041.jpg Here for Gas-N Stainless http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...h_100_0042.jpg |
Hey convincor: Did you change your headers too, or just the pipes?
They look (and sound) great. I know a guy that went to SS pipes on his SPF (versus the standard SPF pipes) and they were definately louder. But I was under the impression that the change in sound was due more to the larger (less restrictive) openings in the pipes (versus the SPF pipes) than it was due to the material that they were made out of. |
just the pipes. header are stock FFR ceramic coated 4 into 4's.

I replaced the SPF ceramic coated pipes with stainless pipes from Stainless Steel Specialties. Good seat-of-the-pants performance increase, much better appearance and, yes, an increase in volume.
Have a slight golden hue at the header/collector but the rest of the pipes take no work at all. I went with a pretty large (long) heat shield to help protect the legs of the not so aware passengers and lookie-lous. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...m/IM002021.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...m/IM002018.JPG |
Terry where did you get the side pipe shields?
|
I got them from Stainless Steel Specialties out of Tennessee:
http://www.stainless-specialties.com/ Great quality for the pipes and shields. Heat shields are 27" long and were $177 each (01/26/2006). There is no "golden hue" as they are not directly in contact with the exhaust heat. You will like them should you choose to go with them. Best - Terry |
