Question on Edelbrock heads

After 12 years of driving my E-M Cobra with a 302, I've decided to build an FE for it. I have a 390 and morphing it into 432ci. with a Scat rotating assy (Mahle flat tops, H-beam rods.)

I want to use Edelbrock heads. I would like to use the 76cc 427 LR/MR heads #60079 as the larger chamber would put the comp. ratio about where I want it. Are the only differences, between the 72cc and 76cc heads, the chamber size and header bolt patterns, or are the valves spread wider in the 427 heads vs. the 390-428? The last thing I want is valve to cylinder wall interference.

Whats the next to last thing you want?????
The 427 stage 2 heads from Kieth will clear on 4.155 bore but probably won't on the 390 bore.
We just did a 428pi engine for Bob Brown ( Bullet Bob on here) and he loves it---maybe he will respond

If I were spec'ing the package out I would prefer to run the smaller chamber Edelbrock heads and a dished piston. Dished pistons are readily available from Probe or Diamond.

The only differences in the heads is that the small chamber is "as cast" and has both the "side by side" CJ bolt pattern as well as the "up & down" on the exhaust.

I recently CC'd a set of "as cast" Ed heads and they came in consistently at 75-76ccs
The machined version may be way over 76cc's if this is any indication.

c6ae, that's an interesting observation. Now I'm gonna have to cc mine to be sure. Dang you!

Here's the answer I received from Chris Rowe at Edelbrock

Tom,

The valve locations on both heads are different, if you use the 60079 heads then you need to run pistons for a 427ci engine.

Looks like the 427 MR heads won't fit on my 390 block

Tom,

Listen to Barry. He has help me greatly with my build. He has great information

Interesting, I had thought that the valve locations were the same on both heads, that both heads have the intake valve off centerline like a 390-428 head, and the exhaust valve is father from centerline like a 427 head.

And now that I think about it, I think that's exactly how I had to space the rocker arms on the shafts.

The heads have the same valve spacing which is .050 wider than a 428CJ and .050 narrower than the 427 MR. The heads are the same except for the machined chambers and exhaust bolt pattern. The 428 version comes in at about 72 to 74 and the MR 427 version comes in at about 76 to 78 ccs. We check all of the heads and mill as needed to get to the desired chamber size. We order the head bare with the guides out so that we can CNC port them as needed and then install the guides. We use our own hardware as well in the heads. If you order the heads from Edelbrock they both come with a 2.09/1.66 valve package. We use a 2.19/1.75 in the blocks that are over 4.165 most all of the time. I like the 427 machined chamber because the valve is not as shrouded and flows more through out the lift range if you do the right valve job on the heads.
I would use the 6008 427 castings with the 2.09/1.66 valves in your application and they will come in at about 78ccs untouched. We do a Stage one head for 1595.00 that has our own valve job with the valves back cut, bowl blended and gasket matched and it is worth about 30 to 35 over the out of box Edelbrock heads and the Stage 2 we do is worth about 75 HP over the out of box heads. We can help you get a piston that would give you the compression that you want from a couple of companies. Good luck with your project and let us know if we can help. Thanks, Keith Craft

I had Jerry Clayton build a 1966 428FE and he call Keith and ordered a set of Stage II heads to Keith recommendations as well as Erson rockers . I would recommend these heads to anyone.

Tom

Kieth was offering a very special price on another forum on head packages--I don't remember which one but he had a special pricing on 30 sets of edelbrocks

And I want to add that Bob Brown has been demostrating the way his car runs to many people--they are all impressed with its street manners and hold on to your hat demos
