pushrod checker ?

I'm going from a hyd cam to a comp 282S in a 428 with factory adjustable rockers. Do I need to check for the correct pushrod length or will the standard (9.157 length work? Jon

yes check.......comp cams may tell you their set up is for factory length, do not trust this.....check everything. i got a set of lifters that were packaged wrong from them. trust nothing.

Agreed. check legnth. if you don't you will prematurely wear various components depending on long or shortness --and be off on your valve opening geometry.

Pushrods are available in lengths + or - .in minor amounts. ---alternately decking the block or miliing the heads can make a long pushrod "shorter".....(HEHEHEHE)

My pushrods are 3/8" x 9-3/8" long on my 428 from SA. The motor has alum. heads and roller rockers. I don't know if this helps?

I just ran into a pushrod length problem on my 428.I am using comp super roller lifters, mech roller cam, edelbrock heads, ferrea valves and .060 lash caps.Originally I ordered the 9 and 3/8 pushrods from Lunati, they were too long.Lunati does not include the cup when stating the length.so I got a checker from trickflow for 8.3 to 9.3 Inches in length.I determined my motor needed a 8.950 length. Now Smith Bros. pushrods was going to make a custom set for me for 28 $ each.Keep in mind I have 800 lbs of open pressure. So at that price would have been almost 500 bucks a set.So what I done was found a used set of jesel rockers from a nascar cup shop(they are all over ebay) for 100 bucks. They have the adjuster screws that will fit directly in a set of Comp Roller Rockers for FE and allows you to use a ball tip pushrod for the rocker end. Then I found a set of pushrods that were double tapered .125 thickness from another used cup parts vendor and was able to get them for 30$.Not only did it save me some money, but alot of cup motors use a 8.950 length pushrods and every other cam and pushrod company makes them everyday with the ball ends.So if you are ever in a bind there is a good chance jegs or summit has them in stock. The screws I was referring to was from jesel, they use 3/8-24 threads 1.25 inches long and use a 5/16 ball.If you can get ahold of a set of these and change to a double ball ended pushrod it will save you alot of trouble from buying custom pushrods.

trickflow pushrod checker

I purchased a trickflow pushrod checker and found that the cup was to small for the ball end of the rocker.

The trick flow rod with the cup end is 5/16 cup but probably would get you close enough. On a FE shaft mount rocker system the pushrod length does not have any critical effect on rocker arm geometry like a stud mount rocker. So as long as you are close on the measurement you should be fine.

What works best for me is to take that cup checker and trim the cup portion down until it's essentially flat - just a locating divot left in the center. Measure your desired length not forgetting lash - and order your pushrods specifying the length to "bottom of cup". Your pushrods will come in marked as "BOC" next to the length. Easy.
