Pushrod Length
 
OK guys, here it is; 428 block (stock deck ht.), Edlb. heads, rockers from Pumpbuilder, comp cams hyd roller w/ crane roller lifters. Using my pushrod checker with the rocker adj. in the middle of it's throw and the lifters on the cam base circle I'm measuring pushrod length to be right at 8.8". This is my first FE so all of what I know (which most would say ain't much) is from books and forum cross talk. That being said I haven't seen any referance to PRs that short in any of my reading. So, am I F'in something up or what?

Have you allowed for the preload in the lifter and head gasket thickness, plus have you put some engineers dye on the valve tip & cycled the crank/cam/valvetrain thru a couple of revolutions to check for a central wear pattern with this 8.8" pushrod installed[ Yes, a little tricky to do with a new hyd roller lifter-you will need some very light check springs on the valves and have to watch for lifter compression closely to enable this check]
Many hyd roller lifters are taller than the flat tappet version which could explain the pushrod length difference.

You should only have about 2 or 3 adjuster threads showing below the rocker. And enough clearance so that the pushrod cup does not touch the rocker body at any point in its travel. Normally we see pushrod lengths on roller stuff come in somewhere between 8.950 and 9.050 - you're numbers do seem on the short side.

lovhamr Steve Mine length was 8.870" end to end with the correct ends. I also run hollow pushrods. This was for a Shelby block and heads with Erson rockers and crane hydro roller lifters. The Camshaft is also crane. 1020 head gaskets. This was with no compression on the plunger of the lifter. I run my motors with only .015" of plunger depression. This goes away when the motor is hot. It's all Aluminum. The other thing is if you over rev the motor with hydros and they pump up there is alot less chance of damaging the valves and piston, this is IMO. and has worked for me in other motors too. Street motors I would setup with a 1/2 turn on the adjuster for the rocker. Every motor has a different want and need. Rick L. You also may want to look at 3/8" pushrods, they are stronger with less bending ability under loads.

We keep a pushrod in stock that should work with this and they are made by Smith Brothers. We get them with the center drilled so that the rocker gets more oil to the ball. Just let us know if we can help. Thanks, Keith
