FE, but what izit?
I think it is a NOS service block, but I'm looking for different opinions; please feel free to agree or disagree with me!! Through some trading/swapping/buying parts, I've come up with a D3TE mirror 105 block. It has an X stamped on drivers side rear, just below head deck, and another in the front lifter valley. Mirror 105, and D3TE in multiple places. Extra webbing in the main bearing webs. 4.05" bore. From what I can tell, its never been assembled, ever! The guy that had it before me has NOT had it sonic tested, and I only got it today. I took some pic's earlier this evening, but I can't get them to upload, maybe too much pixels?
thoughts? thanks guys! |
Sounds like a 352 to a 410 pump block
wideglidejoe Joe that bore will fit in all these sizes 352, 360, 390, 391, and 410. Its depends on the stroke of the crank that ends up in there. If you go on the FE-forum, the dream team will have an answer for you quick. A sonic check will tell you who far you can bore it out and max cubic inches of motor you can get. A 445 motor is a great torque motor for a car 4.25 stroke and 4.05" bore. IMO just limit the rpms to 6,500 max. HV oil pump with a 80 psi spring. Run it 1 quart over full. Will not hurt anything. Joe,
Load your block up and take over to Stanley Morton (Lynn Lane & 83rd). Call me and I will give you directions. He knows FE's very well and can probably tell you exactly what you have. I am going over today to drop off my stroker for a dyno. Clois |
Sounds like a nice piece. The D3TE means its at least that new - 1973 - and definitely a service block if it was not assembled at any time. The bore says "360 or 390", plus the fact that tose were the only displacements offered at that time.

Thanks for your replies!
Rick, Clois & Barry, thanks so much for your replies!
Rick L, yeah, I knew the 4.05" was the 360/390, I was trying to keep my post as short as possible, but you and I are on the same page on a crank......I've got a 4.25 Scat that I'm trying to decide what to put it in. This block may be it. The only thing is, when I picked up the crank, I also got a set of forged 4.13" pistons (and I-beam rods), which means stock 428 bore. As far as the HV oil pump, I assume you mean a Mellings 57 (or equivalent). What about the 80 psig spring? What psig spring does it come with, and where do I get the 80? thanks for your comments! Clois, good luck on your dyno. I need to swing by your place, I've still got some of your stuff! Thanks for the tip on Stanley. I need to look him up, and he's nice and close! Barry R, thanks for your vote of confidence..."sounds like a nice piece". I've followed all of your stuff in the mag's, Engine Bldr's Challenge (correct title?).....very impressive!! again, guys, thanks for the input! Joe |
Still waiting on my space. Race season means I have been pushed back since I won't be ready to drop it in until sometime next week. Some of the other guys are paying more for their dyno's than I am :) so they get ups!
Joe another local source is Freddie Webb and he not only knows FEs' he probably has a half dozen or so in his shop plus about every combination imaginable. I can give you his telephone number as well. Clois |
