427 Cobra Jet?
 
I found a guy selling what he says is a running 427 Cobra Jet. I can only find info that says there was only a 428 Cobra Jet. As far as serial #'s, the guy says the intake # starts with "CJ" and the block has "427". Dont most the FE blocks have a "427" stamped on them?

No 427 CJ engines
 
He may have an engine that was built up with a mix of 427 and 428CJ parts. I am not aware of any intake that starts with the letters CJ. The factory 428CJ engines had a cast iron intake and the number was C8AE-9524-C in most cases. Not all 427 blocks had a 427 on them. If it is a 427 block it will have cross bolt caps on the middle three mains and you will see the 9/16 heads on the side of the block. Again a ,ot of peole do not know what they have when it comes to FE engines. Good luck, Keith

1) Ignore everything this guy says.
2) Ignore all markings on the outside of the block.
3) Look for the cross-bolted mains and side-oiler galley on the one in a million chance it's a side-oiler or even a 427.
4) Pop out a freeze plug and perform the drill bit test. Here are instructions for that: http://www.network54.com/Forum/74182...hickness+check

Some std FE blocks were cast with part of the outer sideoiler molds in place. Many were cast with the 427's rear bulkhead and have the famous "66-427" cast on the rear of the block. This leads many to think the engine to be a actual 427 which in most cases it's not. Just a guess and also something to be aware of when shopping. Sounds like the seller might not know exactly what he has. So be sure to check out and question everything before any money changes hands.
