Bad cam break in, what will the lifter/ engine sound like?
I am working through some valvetrain noise issues with my 428
I went through the engine redid all the preload on the hydraulic lifters. After I was finished I marked the pushrods to see if they were spinning. One of the 16 looked like it was turning very slowly, and one looked like it was not turning or hardly turning at all. I laid out rags but was leaking oil everywhere so I stopped the engine pretty quick. What should I be listening for or paying attention to, when I refire the engine this weekend? thx |
In extreme cases look for your oil to have a "metal flake" to it, courtesy of your sacrificial cam lobe. With a dial indicator you can measure lobe lift at the rocker arm and compare readings to others. With some FEs with adjustable rockers, depending on the manifold, you can pop the valve cover, unload the lifter/loosen to rocker all the way. Pull the push rod, and with a long thin set of needle nose pliers (I have'em) pull the lifter out. Inspect the base of the lifter carefully as it'll tell the tale. You also can crank the engine a little at a time while inspecting the entire cam lobe surface through the lifter bore. I've got the Milwaukee digital LCD snake camera. It would be perfect for this scenario.
