Yes, put a little mark about 1/8" (I'm guessing, but you could do the math to be more accurate) just before the 40 mark (CCW from the 40 mark...to the left loooking at the front of the engine ...towards the TDC mark).

There's a lot of good suggestions here, but I'd try to get that timing at least close before messing with fuel, carbs, etc. I have no idea why Pony Carbs made that timing adjustment procedure suggestion. It's in their video and I think also in their paperwork.

Are you running an MSD ... they are very sensitive to low voltage . You mentioned the PV being new .... doesn`t mean it isn`t bad as I just went through that . You might try replacing them after reading the plugs .

Good luck .

Plugs all looked good except one. All were light brown/tan except one that was a little darker but still not fouled looking. I was running a stock dist. with a pertronix unit in it but I'm in the process of putting in a new pertronix distributor right now. I also replaced the stock yellow top Ford coil with a new pertronix coil. Plugs are gapped at .032-.035

Had an odd one on the dyno once. Carbs looked nice, and we were able to see fuel trickle from the bowl check screws when you rocked the engine - so we ran it. It went dead lean around mid RPM and literally would not pull any kind of RPM at all. Turned out that the floats were actually screwed down toward the bottom of the bowl - not enough float drop meant no fuel delivery into the bowls when the demand went up.

Check your float level...

Float levels when I checked were just below the sight plugs. I wonder what would happen if I shut it down after driving it and making it go into that condition and check the float level then.
I'm kinda stuck right at the moment with trying to bend a new fuel line from the filter to the fuel log. When I changed distributors it hit the line so it needs changed. It'll be a day or two before I get it fired back up.
