O2 sensor location
Seem like ideal place places the sensor outside the car ( Superformance ) since that is where collector is. I was thinking this would look goofy
Anyone have problems locating sensor on one of the primary tubes per side, or should I just put up with the sensor hanging out in the open Will be running FASt system next year but I wanted to weld the bungs on now since engine is out Thanks |
O2 Sensor Location
You definitely don't want to put in one of the cylinder exhausts. I have a TWM stack system with FAST controller. My sensor is located in the collector. That gives you the "average" of at least one side. Ideal would be a sensor in each side just below the collector. You will get more accurate readings below the collector.
It doesn't look bad. Mine is on the inside (closest to body). The wiring is wrapped in aluminum shielding and nearly matches my side pipes. That's my .02. Mike |
At low RPMs there is enough air that gets back into the pipe to confuse the controller at idle. I ended up moving mine to one of the header lines (yes, just one cylinder where a bung had previously been installed) and it runs much better at lower RPMs. Also, in the collector or side pipe the angle of the sensor is such that it can foul and get moisture built up and I ended up having to replace it. The ideal position for the sensor is straight down. In the Cobra there is no real ideal position to mount it. I asked about a dual sensor (one on each side) and neither Roush nor Accel said it would matter. Their point being that if a cylinder isn't working you don't want the controller to try to compensate for it.

The best place to locate the sensor is within about 18" of the exhaust ports. The problem with our cars is that the collector is usually located much farther away than that. That plus the fact that the sensor should be located within 90 degrees either side of vertical compounds the problem.
I'm running the sensors for my Mass Flo system in a single tube on each side and get reasonable results. Quite a ways out from ideal but you end up having to work with what you've got if you want to go with an EFI installation. Another way to go would be to build shorty tubes into a collector closer to the engine and then 4 faux tubes running out of the body to a faux collector in the normal location. An awful lot of work and not sure it would function any better. I'd say go with mounting in the single tube and see how it works. If you end up having to go to the collector later you can just use a threaded plug in the single tube bung. If you have to go to the collector you may be able to locate the sensor on the back side of the collector and port the body to allow the top of the sensor and the wires to pass through.
