Holley Commander 950. Where to mount the ECU?
The Holley Commander 950 instructions state that a good place to mount the ECU is the glove box to keep it free from dirt & moisture.
I do not have a glove box and I do not have space under, or behind the dashbord. I also don't want to mount it in the cab. The trunk could be an option but the wiring harness will have to be radically modified. The ideal place for me to mount this is in my engine bay, as I have tons of room. Anyone have any experience, or comments regarding engine bay mounting? I spoke with the Tech department at Holley but the technician would not deviate from the printed instructions. It is very unlikely that that the ECU in my engine bay would encounter moisture & dirt. I don't now about heat though. I can vent it to a stream of outside air if I have to. Thanks, Arthur |
Arthur,
Mine is mounted in the top of the driver's footbox (upside down and indoors, not on the engine side), along with the wideband controller. It's fine there, protected from temperatures and the elements, and is thin enough not to infringe on leg/knee room. If you need one I can take a photo. Tom |
Hello Arthur,
I am with Tom on mounting in/on the passenger side of the firewall. All engine or non ECM connections are the weather proof type but NOT the harness to ECM. I do think it is best to keep away from engine heat and any possible moisture like a blown rad. hose or such. Other than maybe needing a little more finesse to mount in a tight or upside down area behind the dash or ?? it is just one time. Another hint is attention to 02 sensor location. I have seen about a 20 % reading difference from heat loss of the exhaust gas if sensors are to far down stream. Mount the sensor as close to the engine in a common pipe as possible. It is all very worth the effort, you will love the performance and responsiveness Have fun |
My FAST ECU is mounted behind the dash on the passenger side. There was plenty of room.

Thanks guys, I'm really stuck for room under & behind the dash. I mounted it in the engine bay yesterday and have remade the wiring harness for a clean fit. I have a Butler Cobra with gobs of room in the hood.
I will make a custom instrument box if I can't find an extruded one of the right size. I will install a instrument cooling fan that will bring fresh filtered air from the front fender scoop. I just need to find a relay that has a 30 minute delayed off function to keep the instrument fan blowing for about 30 minutes after engine shut down. Yes, this is easier than fitting it the passenger cab. Arthur |
