Looking to Sell a CMC Shelby Cobra

My dad past away in 2015. My mom wants to sell his Shelby Cobra that he bought in the 80 from CMC. He had never put it together or taken it out of the crate. I need help putting a value on it. The manual has step by step assembly instruction. He has a 351 Windsor. i don't know if it runs but it has been garage kept since he bought it. He also has a 9 inch rear end that has been custom fit for the cobra. He has everything for it but the rims and tires that i know of. He has a front end for some where in the garage that came out of a 80 mustang. Also all accessories that came with it are still in the original boxes. So can anybody please help with putting a value on it. My sister will be sending me pic so I can post. The 2 I have is of the cover and first page of the manual.

CMC needed 10,000 dollars up front to place an order for the Cobra. Then when it came time to gather the components for shipping, the customer was notified to pay the balance of the contract, whatever that amount was agreed to. The bulk items: frame-body-firewall footwell floor assembly-doors-hood-trunk lid-seat assemblies-windshield-lights-dashboard-bumpers-exhaust pipes-fuel tank-numerous brackets-hinges-interior-front wheel well panels-hardware inventory-assembly manual got shipped to the customer. Not everything came at once usually and the term BACKORDER was common. If your father created a file and inventory record for the Cobra, that will help to know what was paid and what is all there. You could then expect to ask for the kit price. For the engine and front end, check what the salvage yard prices are for those. Others here can offer more info also. Good Luck.

Harry, Thanks for the response. My mom going to take everything out of the boxes and take picture. I also asked her to dust the car off and take it out of the crate to get better pic. My dad did not take any thing out of the boxes so I know he does not have a inventory sheet. Hopefully with the pic i get it will have all the parts.

Also have to add CMC was notorious for not getting back to customers when they were going to ship the BO parts. It took me near two years hounding them to get everything that was supposed to have come with the kit. There are a lot of brackets,and other trinkets that without going through the manual it is impossible to know where they go even with the manual it's difficult to identify them. It could get overwhelming trying to sort through it all. I would suggest trying to find someone with experience building cars locally who might be able to offer some guidance or for that matter help sell the car as it sits.

My CMC came with an order list, 'several typed pages', that would fade and become harder to read over time. This list showed the item number and quantity of what was shipped originally and what was on BACKORDER. As I went through each item, I would check off the item number on this list. I located within the construction manual the picture of the items I had on hand and wrote their item numbers next to their pictures. When it came time to assemble the car, I knew that I had that part on hand because it was identified with an item number. As a BACKORDER item came in, I would check it off the list and identify it in the manual. You might not want to mark in the manual itself, but you could use it to help make a separate inventory sheet. A few more items to add is a convertible top and brackets, plexiglass side windows, cockpit cover with snaps, overall car cover and maybe a roll bar. Lastly, don't throw any boxes or packing away, because something hidden might just get tossed out.

I wouldn't take the car out of the crate, to a buyer an untouched car would be worth more. I paid $11,500 for my complete kit in 2002 and everything was there except Big Block motor mounts which arrived a couple of weeks later, nothing back ordered. Assuming yours is complete you could probably get somewhere north of $11,500 as your Dad had sourced an engine, front and rear end. $15k would be a good starting point I would think. What part of the country are you in?
