Removing the hood turned out to be a non-issue.
Surprisingly, the driver's side header bolts were not hard to access from under the car. The passenger side header bolts presented more of a problem. The bolts located on the insides of the header pipe bends leave little room to operate with a 3/8" open end wrench. We ended up removing the side pipe and pulling the passenger side cylinder head with the headers still attached. Removing the headers with the cylinder head on the bench was easy.
Not much more to do to get the engine out:
1) Disconnect the starter wires.
2) Disconnect the fuel supply line.
3) Disconnect the torque converter.
4) Remove the motor to bell housing bolts.
5) Remove the motor mount bolts.
