I'd pick a solid color, with the two thin stripes over the top, and the rocker panel stripes with "FORD". And of course four huge roundels.

Dwight,
Your poll really surprises me. Black is not doing well. Happily surprised at the vote. Really enjoy the pics guys. Ralphy |
I'm fond of the Gulf scheme :)
|
Black????
yes, black did not get many votes but the Gulf got 1/3 of the votes. Maybe I should post another poll.
DougD, I think I will go with the red with two small (medium) white stripes. Still working on the car. I'll paint it in late spring. Keep posting the pictures. Dwight |
What kind of wheels and what color??
Dwight My first thought is going original with the Gulf color cars with normal aluminum finished rims or orange. I am not a Black fan at all. Too much work to keep it perfect. Here's the thing, saw a gt-40 at the KitCar show at Carlisle 2 years ago. Car was all black, no strip and just pin lines of dk red or orange on the rims and 1 side line. After 2 hours of looking at the car in this color, I would have a black car. Darth Vader has nothing on this GT-40, even the exhaust and worked motor gave it the correct sound. Rick L.

I would love to see a picture of that car.
Rick, I'm with you on the black car is hard to keep clean. I'm not much of a waxing guy. I have an 06 Mustang with the lower half black and I can wash it, move it into the garage and it's looks dirty. Black is beautiful but hard to keep clean. Coach has a black Coupe and it always looks good. Even the bottom. But Coach loves to clean his cars. I was talking to Lainhart yesterday and he said when he gets his Cobra repainted it would be black, no stripes, orange centers on his rims, "orange nose band"? and a small amount of orange on the rear end. He said he could not see the back of the Cobra in his mind yet. But something orange on all four sides. I suggested orange tag bracket. He is thinking stripes around the tail lights or pin stripes. Left out an important thing with color
Dwight Seeing this car on the road, Beening 40" high is nothing. In the old days when guyed raced these cars, they needed to add bright colors to the nose to see them. Worst color is a dark gray. On the track they blend into the track unless running orange tape of lights. The pros have this problem, think about the people of the road with less smarts. Summer time, windows up, ac on, music going, and some dope cuts you off or a tractor trailer cuts you off, road pizza. I saw an accident in 73 with my parents on route 18 in town. A women driving a 68 vette she just got for her son and was driving home. Person pulled out on the highway and cut off the tractor trailer. He went into the fast lane and ran her over, she came out the other side. Only damage to the car was windshield frame and drivers seat. Everybody stopped to help. Tractor driver said he never saw the car in the left lane or would have hit the car coming out in front of him. Speed on the road is only 50 mph. The vette was yellow with blackin out hood and truck lid. Every body lived, that was good. I have seen tracks make guys add some tape to the noses of cars to help better see them when racing and IMO it helps. On the street is a different thing. I still like an all black GT with 18-19" wheels. Rick L. Ps The car was in ERA booth 2 years ago. I think a Doc owns it in VA. Will see if I can get a picture or find out who owns it, it might be on the forum.
