In 2008, three pre-production Ford GTs offered in Las Vegas
I get the word late, like 5 years late. There was a recent newspaper story about GT Joey in Long Island who owns one of these pre-production cars, limited to 5 mph so this is the first I heard they sold these cars or at least offered them after the production Ford GT program was shut down.
Here's the specs The auction of three Pre-Production Ford GT's was held at SAI in Las Vegas in 2008 and some of the buyers were attendees at the Ford GT Rally 3. Here's some facts on the cars: ________________________________ "CP1": VIN: 1FAFP90SX4Y400004 Color: Black - no racing stripe, silver side stripe Odometer: Unknown J1,J2,J3 were 4Y400001, 2, and 3 respectively - this is the first engineering unit after the centennial cars First CP (Confirmation Prototype) to be built which means it was the first fully representative prototype with full powertrain, body, and interior in the program - the "first full test vehicle" The emission program was the critical path for the entire program - which is why it was the first one built Used exclusively for Emissions Certification Testing * Has considerable content that never made it to production (not a complete list): Aluminum splitter Matte vinyl interior Chrome shift knob Birdirectional (exposed weave) carbon clamshell inner panel Rockford Fosgate stereo Blue Multimatic Dampers Black engine valve covers Black supercharger Ford GT logo filler cap Aluminum Roof Panel Early prototype silver grommet seats * Still has emission lab test tail pipes on it and emissions feedgas panel on rocker * Emissions Lab Engine Hour Meter Installed: 180 hours (as of 8/21/2008) You read that right folks. This was the FIRST Ford GT built after the three Centennial cars. It's a 4Y4 car. That means you could own a 2004 Ford GT! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- "PB2-1" VIN: 1FAFP90SX5Y400045 Color: Blue with White Stripes Odometer: 47,524 (as of 8/21/2008) Options: Forged BBS Wheels, McIntosh Stereo, Red Calipers First car in the PB2 pre production build (last pre production build before production) Vehicle's owner was Manufacturing and was used for mileage accumulation, manufacturing, and electrical prove-out After the vehicle successfully completed it's testing it was transferred to Product Development (SVT) For the brief amount of time that a MkII follow on program was in the planning stages, it was used as the program vehicle The vehicle still has a prototype small pulley for increased supercharger boost (this pulley eventually became the Ford Racing Pulley) The vehicle still has exhaust manifold heat shields printed with "Mark II" visible when the clamshell is opened Vehicle has "Ford GT" logo fuel filler cap As previously mentioned, this is the vehicle they initially used while planning the development of a Ford GT Mark II! ------------------------------------------- "PB1-1" - The Nardo Car * VIN: 1FAFP90S25Y400037 Color: Yellow with Black Stripes Odometer: 37,886 (as of 8/21/2008) Options: Forged BBS Wheels, McIntosh Stereo, Red Calipers First vehicle in the PB1 pre production build 1 of 2 vehicles (the other being CP15) to be taken to Europe for testing First car to certify top speed at 209.1 mph at Nardo, Italy Roll Cage Dual 5 point Sparco Racing Harnesses Development front cooling aerofoils First prototype vehicle to be driven by journalist in Europe (Cover of Top Gear July 2004) Vehicle used to support numerous track events Has SVT developed track alignment Vehicle used to develop Hoosier R6 track tire Roll Cage Dual 5 point Sparco Racing Harnesses Development front cooling aerofoils A/C Condenser removed for optimal cooling This auction was a charity event. The cars will were sold on a reserve set by SVT with proceeds above reserve to the Loma Linda Veterans Hospital Charity. (that is a great hospital in Redlands) I’m curious what they sold for. I heard one bid of $135,000. And also how long do you have to keep the limiter on it that keeps it at a top speed of 5 mph. And what year do you register them as? Are these going to be the earliest second gen Ford GTs , thereby worth more than the production ones?------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
Interesting they have a VIN vs a SN.
CP-1's VIN may show up as invalid since the year reflects 2004. I would say the buyer was not given a title or MSO but instead a B.O.S. |
Now what about the '03 Centennial Ford GTs?
I remember back in '03--ten years ago--seeing them on TV, Ford made a big deal that they would have three complete GTs ready to take to the event and I thought they had the body style of the production car, the 2005 body but when I googled Centennial celebration Ford GT the Car & Driver story showed one of the test mules that had a slapped together body (one red one didn't even have the complete front end look ), one of three they made just to test mechanical components. So there's three more that may come up for auction someday.
In the Car & Driver story. the only reason I think they had the wrong car pictured is that big magazines have a three month lead time so maybe pictures weren't available yet so they ran the mule shot. 2005 Ford GT Road Test – Review – Car and Driver Hot Rod magazine, in November, had the three I remember from TV news with complete as-per-2005 bodywork 100 Years of Ford Motor Company - Hot Rod Magazine Have any of the Centennial Ford GTs or test mules come up for sale yet? I bet more than one engineer took one of the latter home. When they do come up for auction it will be interesting to see if they are valued at more than the Las Vegas Secret Auction cars because they are in fact, chronologically earlier. |
I no longer use this account. I started to use an older StormBringer_1 account. However, I left this site and was clearing out old PM's and I just saw your message on my control panel. Any questions just send me a PM in private and if I can answer I will.
This week I contacted Dave on his FordGTforum.com because I gave my newer registry away. I am currently in negotiations for a trade for one of these Pre-production GT's. At the Las Vegas auction the black GT went for $225,000. Blue with white stripes sold for $155,000. Yellow Nardo GT went for $305,000. You can match up the serial numbers with the colors I mentioned. Also you have to remember it was for a charity event which prices are usually more. Also this was basically invitation or people at the event only. I don't think it was widely advertised. The owner of the site I mentioned had a lot to do with saving these GT's and making them available for purchase to collectors. Ciao |
I should have posted this with my OnyxRider post. On the FordGTForum thread there is a GT tech that has a list of all these GT's with his notes. You can not go by the numbers because they were not built in order all the time. An older # may have been built before an earlier one. I'm not sure that these can be registered. The air bags are inert and useless and there are other concerns. In the past I've had no problem throwing a dealer tag on various makes.

Make cool race car if they can't be registered.

Ford GT PB2-1
Hi guys, I know it's been a long time since this post, but I just came across it on the web. I am one of three of the lucky guys who bid on and got a 2004 Ford GT Pre-Production car. I own PB2-1, which was dubbed the "Sign Off Car" meaning the last prototype that Ford finally used as acceptable to start the actual production of car #1. I still own the car and am proud to be the care taker of such a special part of Ford history. The car was used as a model by Ford when they were planning a Mark II follow up car. So, the car has several special prototype custom one off Mark II engine parts. Some of which have made it into Ford racing parts production.
As of late, I've been contacted by a few people that know I own the car, to sell the car. I assume it's due the rapid rise in value of the street versions and upcoming new car soon to be released. However, I just can't part with it. It is however a little frustrating that I can't (or won't drive a museum piece). 😊 |
