GT-40 production

Does anybody know the amount of original MkI, II, III, & IV, GT-40's produced. Also what kind of prices are the original cars going for?

I believe there were 169 total GT's. It all depends on who you talk to. The Safir cars,known as MK V's, totaled 45 but there were some duplicate chasis made and later finished by private owners. This count also includes the three Mirage GT's. The last and most famous MK I's
were 1074 and 1075 which were Mirage chassis with MK I bodies on them. 1075 won Lemans in 1968 and did it again in 1969. It's been guesstimated that 1075 is worth in eccess of 6 million. The GT's value depends greatly on it's racing accomplishments. For a plain and simple road version of a MK I the price can be from 300,000 to 400,000 easily. The lowest auction price I have ever seen a GT sell for was 275,000.

Hersh, Thank you for the interesting info. I just started looking into a GT40 replicas. Can't afford a real one. Are you happy with your Roaring Forties GT40? I understand that Levy Racing in the Phoenix Az. area is a dealer. I really would be interested in a GT40 MKII. Does Levy/Roaring Forties offer a MKII with a 351/427 stroker, or do they just offer the small block 302 with the motec fuel injection.

The RF cars can use the 351/427 stroker combination if you like. Come over to www.gt40s.com and join the fun there. You'll probably find most people prefer the 347s etc. but there are some 351 strokers as well.

RF does have a very nice looking MK II. I do believe that there is a few with 351's in them. Personally I think it's overkill but what ever floats your boat.:3DSMILE:

I absolutetly luv the GT I built from RF. I can't say enough good about Robert and his team. They try as hard as anyone to make the customer happy. The kit is as good as it gets in my opinion.

Thanks for both of your input. I figured that Roaring Forties made a nice GT-40 replica. It is nice to get the owners of these cars input on how they enjoy them. I was interested in the 351/427 stroker combo, because the original MKII's had 427's in them. The MkI's , I believe ran 289's or 302"s. It seemed the MkII"s and the MkIV's did most of the winning at Lemans in 1966 and 1967. I believe the MkI Gulf car won Lemans in 1968 & 69.

Gary seemed to want info about originals, which were sold at a premium when they were introduced -- much like the 2005 Ford GT is being offered at a premium. Now that old originals have collector status, the H-M cars (basically "new antiques") have a provenance that replicars can't touch.

Don't get me wrong: I think the '05 GT is sexy as heck and I'd LOVE to own two: one to use and another to park just in case it turned out to be a good investment. HOWEVER, the '05 GT basically promises Z06 performance at 3 times the price -- where's the value in that? The top 'Vettes have proven reliability, offer more sophisticated technology -- and they appreciate.

I used to think of Ford as a "performance for the masses" sort of company, but the price tag on the GT (together with the 1500/yr production cap) ... and the price/performance of the lesser SVT offerings ... makes me think that Ford has become an elitist organization. :(
