Holley 4 - Barrel Street Avenger Question???
First my novice apologies!
So just new to me :) in my very over zealous happy grin I just had my new to me baby out... I know its a Holley Street Avenger 4 barrel but unsure of size. HELP please.. My situation is 3 parts... 1- Cold start actually sounds and smells normal (minus the ever present "Gassy" smell in my garage. 2- restart has some lag issues 3- Shutting her down from a cruise my girl coughs up a lung (ha only a mild exaggeration) with a bit of puff white smoke from the air cleaner...I imagine its left over gas??? Seeing some carbon in both the carb itself and end of the exhaust pipes. Still seems responsive at acceleration through every gear. |
Tell us more details about the motor. A lot of the time the details of the motor may help explain some issues with carburetors. Run on or dieseling can be due to an idle speed too high. Or a big cam with low vacuum and a carb not adjusted for it. Poor hot starts could be due to some perculation of fuel in the bowl when shut down hot. Sometimes an insulator gasket under the carb helps a lot if there is hood clearance. If there is too much initial timing in the motor it tends to show up in hot starts but usually by the starter lugging down. But more motor information is needed.

The carb size should be visible in numbers stamped on the choke horn. You will probably see a 670, 770 which will be your cfm's.

Drop the idle to 850 - 900 and see how that works, also may want to check timing.

670 is your number. For some reason the Street Avengers are rated 670 vs 650 or 770 vs 750. I don't know why. I had a Street Avenger 770. Swapped to an AED 750 with a mech. secondary double pumper. No choke horn. A more tunable carb at idle which helped get rid of the stumble I had off idle. John |
Holley Carb tuning
Holley has a good web site with lots of videos. HolleyTV.com. I found with my 670 that you must adjust in the proper order; change only one thing at a time; keep a log of the changes and how they helped or hurt; read the plugs. There is no seat of the pants meter as good as reading the plugs. When it comes to carbs, richer is not always better.:LOL:

An 80670 at 670 cfm and 80770 at 770 cfm are pure luck that their list numbers have some correlation to cfm. All other carbs don't.

thanks for the help guys... I finally got her into a shop non the less for some cosmetic work. Mech there is going to take a look at it... I will gladly post what he tells me just as FYI...
