I talked with the engine builder today and he indicated he would have matched them so maybe the previous owner replaced one with what he had. No big deal, I will get it right now.

Carbs are back on. Adjusted the bowls and everything seems to be running fine. The gas smell is mostly gone. I also don't notice a sucking sound for air now. Strange, but it seems like things are significantly better. Once it warms up I will tinker with idle speed and test out more fully.

The 450 for low speed and the 600 for high revs- makes sense, right? :D
Any carbureted car I've owned usually has some gas smell to it from the carb vents.
And with the old cobra or motorcycles, my wife always knew if I took them out, without catalytics, you get that lovely 70s smell I remember :D

It doesn't work like that in dual quad setups, they need to be the same carb, with the same calibration.

I was kidding :LOL: I'd imagine if you did that, one end would run lean and the other rich, or it would do other odd things through the RPM range.

I'm glad you were just kidding Dave.
One could get this to work, but the jetting sizes would be different, since the venturi sizes are different between a 450/465 and a 600.

I tuned the air/fuel mixture on the new carb and what a difference it makes. I cannot believe the difference in the performance. I now have to be more careful as the car gets a little loose when hammering. I could have sworn that I felt some slippage in 3rd gear the other night. Either way, I am happy and thanks for all the helpful insight.

Phil - do you know what jets they went with to tune it?
|
Hello Phil, hope your problem is fixed. Btw, does your handle have anything to do with fly reels? Also, it's a cobra, its supposed to stink! :D

209,
Yep. Problem fixed and yes, Large Arbor is a fly reel provided by Orvis for my salmon fishing trips to that state up north (M) and NE Ohio where the steelhead run. Its a second hobby to the Cobra...The gas smell has lessened quite a bit, but I am not sure why.

In addition to all that has been mentioned aviation gas is an improvement with less odor and longer storage life.

Yeah - I agree - that's pretty whacked. Hard to figure out how that happened - accident or some doped up theory.
I have an old fuel bowl with the umbrella seal. I'll take a look at it sometime an d see if I can figure out the .063" hole idea.

.013 for the bleed hole Dan, not .063.

Well - good thing I haven't gotten around to that yet. I think that was a fat fingered typo of some sort on my part.
Still be interested to know what size jets they put in Phil's carbs.

Gasoline Smell
I have had good luck with additives that make it smell better. Alcohol burning funny cars used it for same reasons. Here's a link but there are many other manuf's. Each flavor has varying degrees of success.....yummy!

Dan,
I talked with my Carb guy and he said it would have 66,67, or 68. I am sorry as he did not know which ones for sure, but thought 68..

OK - that covers a pretty normal range. Stock Holley jetting on 600 carbs was usually 66 or 67 on primary side. Mine had 66s in the 1850s but I put I 67 jets recently. I was curious if they might have gone the other way and smaller than 66 jets.
