Generator / Alternator look alike

The Cobra we are seeking to recreate, CSX2129, was originally equpped with a generator. We would like to keep the look of a generator but have the benefits of an alternator. Powermaster makes a nice look alike alternator.

Wondering if any one has any experience with this product. does it fit the stock Ford generator bracket?

Also wondering if there are any other, perhaps less expensive options.

Have you considered using a real Lucas generator; then you wouldn't have to replicate one? Apart from electric radiator fan(s), which should be intermittent use, what high current draw items are there to consider?
Cheers,
Glen

The Summit application chart for it shows basically every engine Ford used during the era.

Interesting thought. So accustomed to thinking 'alternator' had not seriously considered the option of a true generator.

Have not researched it but guessing would need some sort of external regulation device.

Only significant power draw would be the lights and cooling fan.

I suspect one would want a robust battery to keep everything running when the output drops at low rpm / idle.

You mention Lucas. I am guessing the early Cobras used a Ford unit. I suspect they would not be that expensive.

Chuck, you're correct. CSX2129 would have a Ford generator

CSX2000 - CSX2070 ...Lucas generator
CSX2071 - CSX2200 ...Ford generator
CSX2201 - CSX2589 ...Ford alternator

Cheers,

Glen

The "PowerGen" unit works well and provides a lot more amperage at low RPMs than any generatior will.

You will not have the tach drive off the back as the Lucas units had. The PowerGen has an internal regulator so the regulator on the firewall can be for "show" only making wiring easy.

I was just guessing. Wherever did you come up with those details? Excellent bit of info. Thanks

Good points. Wiring the Power Master unit would certainly be easier. Hard to misfire a single wire.

Now I need to find a good picture of what the generator regulator originally used would have looked like. Would want to use a "dummy" unit for looks on the firewall.

There's a lot of good info in the Originality Forum as well:

I ordered a power master unit and after recieving it I examined it and found that the extrusion body had breakout where the extrusion body was drilled and tapped for the screws that bolt the end castings into place. I sent it back.

I then contacted Don Allen at Gener-Nator and he converted the Ford generator for my "matching numbers" 260 engine build for the 50th anniversary slabside. His workmanship is flawless, I highly recommend him.
