Would a 351 Cleveland Engine Fit the JBL?

Clois Harlan 07-16-2003 02:25 PM

Yes,

I saw one at the Shelby meet here. Guy was from Colorado I think.

Actually, I think the 351 Windsor or Cleveland will fit in about any Cobra.

I doubt it, a clevelend is a WIDE motor. They don't have a lot of extra room between the footboxes and the exhaust ports with a windsor. Just guessing though, hopefully JBL will answer.

EngineerMan,

It appears that a Cleveland will fit if you use Windsor heads. (You will have to modify the block water passages to use a windsor type head. The Ford motorsports catalog gives details on doing this.)

I think that the Cleveland type heads have the exhaust ports aiming down much like the Yates style heads. This will not work without significant chassis modifications. (John Marsey can tell you all about these mods.)

JBL Dave says that the Cleveland block is very close in dimensions to the windsor unit except it is 4 bolt main. He also says the bell housing is the same bolt pattern.

It would be your best bet to speak with Dave at the shop as he is the Ford engine expert.

I know next to nothing about about these type engines.

However, If you need to know something about a Cosworth FVA, BDA, BDD, DFV, DFX, or even Coventry Climax stuff, I can help out with some truly arcane information. ;)

Richard:

Do you know if anyone has attempted to put a DFV in a Cobra?

Inquiring minds want to know.

This would motivate you!!!

We often talk, compare, and dream (wheather we like it or not) about how much power our various cars have (or might not have) and how they perform on the on a dyno, given the chance. Better known as "Bragging Rights." Recently I was searching for some odd pieces and contacted a well known engine builder hoping he might be able to assist. I inquired about their Mountain Motors, and how they arrive at the displacement and how hard they run them. Size does matter.
Lets define "Large". I'm not talking about a 302 that's had a stroker crank put in it or even a 351 that's been stroked to 408 or 427 or an FE 427 with a 428 crank or a even 460 that's been stroked to 500"+, Nahhh. That ain't "BIG". How about 4.75" bore, 5.75" stroke, and then run it up to 7500 Rpm. That"s a B-I-G 815 CUBIC INCHES. Line forms at the rear.

Mike McCluskey put a 351C (Boss to be exact) in Carroll
Shelby's personal 289 Cobra in 1972. It is wide but not as wide as an FE or 385 series engine, so if an FE or 429/460 fits a Cleveland should fit easily. Only a few 351C's were 4 bolt mains the majority are 2 bolts although the block is cast with the neccesary meat to machine them.

BBC?

Richard / Dave:

Guys, at the risk of appearing sacrilegious, what difficulties would one encounter attempting to fit a Chevy BB into a JBL?

Thanks in advance for your time and advice!

Richard Hudgins 07-17-2003 09:23 AM

Rich,

I do not know if anyone has put a DFV in a Cobra. AC would be the folks to ask.

If it were me, a 1981 vintage DFL (Normally aspirated Group C engine 3.9 liters, 620hp at 11,500.) would be the choice.

Or, for the criminally insane, a DFL Turbo motor (Group C, 3.9 liters, horsepower dependant on boost knob, rumored to be in the 1000 bhp range for qualifying.)

Either of these engines would be perfect in a JBL chassis. I would also be quite willing to design up the mounts for a Hewland MVE-STA 6 speed to go along with these engines.

Ok, now who is going to step up to the plate and build one of these devils?

I do not think that a BBC will fit. The BBC is just as big as a BBF and a BBF will not fit.

However, a SBC will fit. Sacrilegious indeed!!!! But they seem to make pretty good motors.

Please note: Dave has been after me for at least a year to design a BB chassis. (He has a big collection of BB stuff and wants to put a Alloy Boss 429 in his personal car.)

I have been resisting this insanity quite strongly as I just cannot think of how to build a structure around this lump.

Now, I could make the engine a stressed member and just hang everything off the nose of the engine like current race cars. But it would be costly and somewhat complex as the engine is not designed for this application.
