jbl hood--non original, interpretive license taken

well, i couldn't find an original jbl hood so i had to come up with something!

small one is a gt350 hood from speedway motors, other is a sprint car item i believe.

sorry richard, i just couldn't bring myself to use the 2x12 filter that would have been required with the small scoop. either can be used though. had some hot rod black leftover that a friend shot for me, since i don't know which direction the finish paint will go we just wanted to cover the fiberglass.

You gotta use the smaller one. C'mon.

you're right john, that 2-barrel really doesn't pull that much vacuum**)

this should go on the back of the car!:3DSMILE:

OK Mark....send us the final version of the hood scoop pic.

vector1 07-23-2009 07:03 AM

oh man, that's it. pics don't do it justice, guy that did the paint liked it and he is pretty detailed oriented doing lots of muscle cars and everybody that sees it likes it. 10% of the population don't know what these cars represent anyway. it's pretty impressive when that thing starts to stuck air. anyway, haven't had time to mess with anything lately. trying to get started on radiator shroud, belly pan, maybe a splitter, and a couple short turnouts on the exhaust possibly. just got an 825 bg rr carb in, put the 750 on the 351 crate motor, 750 at wot on the 406 was still pulling around 1.5" vacuum, 825 should flow over 900cfm and breath better. without the efi i should be able to go to a smaller battery, take passenger seat out, change exhaust pipes and take off 50#'s, be around 2300#. been looking at race tires but don't think there will be any wt. savings there, possibly 5#'s each corner. discovered by switching wheels the goodyear f1's suck for traction, michelin pilot sports are better. looking at the khumo's for race tire. how's your end of the world?

vector1 07-23-2009 06:40 PM

btw, the 825 carb rocks! changed the jets from 76 to 80 off the bat, went to a 8.5pv from a 6.5, jet extensions and pv baffle without even starting the car. little slower right off idle but from 1/4 throttle up it has more power imo. i couldn't floor it to check wot vacuum, don't think there is enough tarmac to go around.

1 farmer wave
1 carload full of kids wave
1 pretty lady at the quicky mart wave
1 gentleman honks and waves
1 little kid peering over the doorsill with bug eyes and a huge grin

this car gets more attention then the silver one i believe.

jdean 07-23-2009 07:53 PM

OK so how about a pic or two of the "finished" product :)

vector1 07-25-2009 05:51 AM

this is close to finished cosmetically as she's going to get.

http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...car_Small_.jpg

picture still doesn't do it justice.

took off 60 lbs yesterday--battery was worth 25 #s which was good wt., exhxuast was 14, and pass. seat was worth another 21 both of which were prob not worth as much, better bring a pillow if you want to ride. that is almost 400#s taken off from when i purchased the car.

the exhaust was too loud so full length pipes are going back on. pipemax showed 17" for max tq. and i wanted to try it, will go to 34" now so putting 5 lbs. back on.

so now the ride weighs 2290 lbs.

if i purchase race wheels that would be worth 10-15 lbs, which would be good. i know where to get another 30 at the transmission but is cost prohibitive right now and not as advantageous weight wise.

jdean 07-25-2009 05:02 PM

Mark did you say you are planning on taking this one to RnG this year?

vector1 07-26-2009 06:53 AM

always take the big gun when you go to a party, you think it's too much?

jdean 07-26-2009 12:01 PM

I've read some pretty good reviews about the Kumhos and Nittos for 17" rubber.

On the hood scoop...Its always a dilemma....run a big air cleaner to optimize high rpm power vs. getting what fits under the hood. Since your black one is race only, you can get away with more.

There are a few guys around here running a custom-made dropped base that allows a taller 3" filter element in their long Cobra-style cleaners while maintaining hood clearance. This give a lot of cubic inches of filter to support their 600 hp engines.

In your case it looks like the top of your carb is about even with the hood!

vector1 07-26-2009 07:58 PM

there's a 1" spacer under the carb and the mouth is about an 1" below the hood if i remember right. i can drop the filter base down about an inch or even use a drop base but still couldn't get the 14" cleaner under the conventional scoop. the bottom of the cleaner now is just about even with the hood opening. the condensation on the outside base of the carb and even on the butterflies after i turn it off from the outside air cooling the carb is amazing, something i had not expected.

radiator shroud is almost complete, if anyone offers to make one for you whatever the cost is worth it. i'll have pics maybe tomorrow.

CHANMADD 07-26-2009 09:55 PM

It looks like to me that you may end up creating a vacuum at the back of the filter and suck air away from the intake causing a rich condition . The high pressure area at the cowl is created by the windshield...which you don't have.....just my .02c

there are a couple pics of the radiator shroud. the debris on the radiator is bug. the aluminum piece from the inlet to the radiator was difficult. i don't know what jbl uses or what it is supposed to look like but this is the best i could do. i wanted to use as few pieces as possible and had to scrap a couple ideas, the curves and aluminum are just too difficult to work with in large pieces, ended up using 8 different pieces.

i was expecting a large improvement in cooling, it just wasn't there. i guess the benefit would be a reduction in underhood air pressure.

i had problems with the car not idling down and finally looked at the brand new davis dui distributor and discovered the mechanical advance sticking. there was a place under the rotor that was relieved but not enough and was catching one of the posts the weights are hooked to. got this fixed and discovered the advance was not what it was supposed to be, had to run the engine at 16 idle to get the advance to 32 which would make the engine idle at 1800-2000 rpm so i sent the distributor back for a checkup, see how this one turns out.

jdean 08-04-2009 05:32 PM

Mark do you have a shroud on the radiator?

vector1 08-04-2009 06:31 PM

yup, there is fan shroud. temp is not a problem, i had just expected a different change with the radiator shroud. maybe taking the fan shroud off would let more air flow?

jdean 08-04-2009 07:52 PM

No you would lose cooling by taking the shroud off. If mine has cooling problems my first change is to install a shroud.

vector1 08-09-2009 03:11 PM

here's a pic of the finished engine bay with carb setup.
