Hood scoop question for a Kirkham
 
Hello everybody,

I am in the process of recutting the opening for the hood scoop. My question is when you cut your openings did you follow the hood scoop contour all the way to the rear?

When I got the car it was cut to the shape of the oval air cleaner. The previous owner did not finish the edges of the cut to my quality standards.

Question for David @ Kirkham, what size aluminum rivets should I used to reattach the hood scoop?

David,
The orginals had the oval opening in the hood, they did not have a hole the size of the scoop. Look in my gallery, if memory serves me correctly I have a picture in there of the underside of my hood with the proper shape, size and placement of the actual opening in the hood below the scoop. ERA also has a great diagram in their manual and on their website. I hope this helps.

Mine has the oval cut out too. I am guessing they didn't cut out any more
than necessary to try to keep metal there for structural integrity.

What type of edge is on the opening on the hood? Does it have a hem? Or a return of any kind? thanks, karl

I could be wrong here but that oval in the picture sure looks like what I have on mine.

The original 427's had an oval opening with a downstanding flange. The opening was centered on the engine. The hood scoop was centered on the hood.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the opening had a flange of any kind.

As far as I know, there was a small flange that stuck down around the opening.

Original Comp and S/C had the cutout pounded down and around to present a flange-type edge on the underside of the hood

Here is a picture of mine.
Underside of the hood is brushed and the underside of the hood scoop is polished.
The rivets are usually 1/8". I used button head allen head small bolts so the holes have to be a little larger than 1/8". Either one works.

David...it wasn't cut that way for an oval air cleaner (street cars)...more to sort of match up with the single carb/turkey pan used on the Comp and S/C cars.

I am sure that Kirkham did not cut the opening, it wasn't even close to there quality standards.

I am doing many special touches to the car, I will post pic's when done.

David...I was commenting more on why the oval shape, regardless of who cut it. You referred to the oval air cleaner...
