Farthest drive...?
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has taken their Kirkhams for a very long, far drive, or even something like a cross country vacation? I'm just curious to see how other owners like to use these cars (other than a weekend drive, occasional canyon run, or track event). -glenn |
The longest single drive in my Kirkham was a bit over 400 miles. I was thinking on driving to the open house next week (950mi from Ventura, CA) and decided it would be way too cold this time of year. Peace, Darren

A guy flew in from Switzerland and drove his car from Arkansas to Utah. He drove mostly on B roads and stayed off from the interstate as much as possible. It took him a few days.
Edit: He had a cool story about picking up a hitch hiker in the middle of no where while driving through a reservation. The guy had to have been 5 miles from any house/building. When he dropped they guy off, the hitchhiker asked him for money. Imagine hitch hiking over the res and getting picked up by a polished Kirkham. That would be cool. Imagine having the guts to ask a guy for money after getting a ride... |
When the engine build was done I picked mine up at FE Specialties in Sacramento and drove to the Bay Area. Spent the night there and drove to LA the next day. 400+ miles 22 mpgs at 2200rpm. Froze my butt off going over the grapevine.

Mine is not a Kirkham, but my "shakedown drive" was 3300 miles - Oregon to Atlanta, GA via Wisconsin. Avatar was taken in Yellowstone park on that intial cross country jaunt.

Impressive shakedown drive Mike....and without a net? A friend of mine in Dallas bought an SPF from Rhode Island.....flew up and drove it back. Looks like you almost doubled him. How long did it take you?
PS - Sorry, I know this is about Kirkhams but I love the topic. Remember the old "Route 66" series with Martin Milner? Someone should make a show like that except with a Cobra instead of a Vette. |
My son and I drove the Cobra, and my 2 brothers were in a Vette up until Wisconsin. Total time on the road was 5 days, with a 1 day rest stop at my Sister's place outside Madison, Wis.
