David you certainly know how to tease the gear heads.

I'm sure it will be just as fabulous as your other cars. Can't wait to see the finished product.

tkb289 07-14-2010 09:39 PM

David,

It will be very interesting to see the tooling and different processes that you guys use to create the body ... sounds like everything from a pile of glued up lumber to a state of the art CNC and everything in between.

I would also imagine that along with all of the precision measuring, there is also the keen eye that gets things just right :) Looking forward to following the progress !

MAStuart 07-14-2010 10:32 PM

David,
where is the diffuser located on your body buck? I am working on my own body buck and am wondering where it should be located? Is it a part for a solid wood buck? Or a part for buck like I am building that has sections located about a foot apart? Thanks Mark Stuart

Cashburn 07-15-2010 05:25 AM

All eyes are peeled for this one...

When you jump into a project like this, how do you keep your ducks in a row from a legal standpoint? Is this not the only body shape/style SA has full legal entitlement to? Do you make a percentage change to it and come away clean?

Love the coupes and looking forward to your next piece of art.

One assumes the billet FE remains on the back burner?

David Kirkham 07-15-2010 08:45 PM

Guys,

I was a co-host tonight on the local talk show. I just got back. I'll answer the questions as soon as I get home. (Tea Party stuff.)

I would be really interested on a U-Tube series on metal forming. I've got two small dents in my car and would like to be able to fix myself....just don't have the courage to start beating on my Kirkham! I've done all the work on my car so far except the wheel alignment! Why stop now!

David,

I would love to see the McClusky Coupe and Pete Brock at Run N Gun as well as any of your Skunk Works projects. There has been so many inovations come from your shop that our industry has to thank you for your compassion for our hobby. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help make this happen.

I'll do some posting tomorrow. I was unexpectedly tied up this weekend. We finished the diffuser form yesterday. Tomorrow we will make a diffuser and I'll YouTube it for you guys. I think you will like it.

Thanks David,

I have followed your progress thru several others that have had the opportunity to view your efforts first hand. Nothing but compliments and admiration for the work Kirkham has done for the industry. Kind of reminds me of Mike Holmes on HGTV "Make it Right"!

David,
I'm curious is you regular body production performed in Poland, and R & D / Prototyping performed in the U.S. ?
The product you folks produce is outstanding.
Regards,
Mike

Yes--as a general statement. All of our R&D is much faster and less expensive here in the US. Over the years, we have made more and more parts in the US as we figure out less expensive and better ways to make things. (I am actually writing a book on this very subject).

We'd be happy to show you around. We give tours almost every week.

We are making the diffuser right now. Just figuring out a few minor changes. I hope to have a video of it up soon.

David,

Great video! :):)

Are all of the panels formed with the material stretched to 'yield' condition?

Is there a prescribed amount of tension put on the material or is it a matter of experience?

It looks like a pretty large sheet of aluminum will fit into this machine, what would be the biggest single piece you can form?

Thanks!

- Tim

We try to stretch the panel and yield the material and hold it there as we push the form into the material...that is not always possible. We stretch the material by experience--sound, Lueder's lines (stretch marks), and other indicators.

Sometimes, you have to drape the aluminum over the form and then start pulling. The friction over the die doesn't allow the material to flow freely. However, sometimes that is the only way you can make the part.

The machine is quite large. I think we can stretch an 8 foot x 12 foot part. We bought the machine as scrap from a military auction. The rams were cut apart with a torch. The wires were just cut. We took the entire machine apart and rebuilt it. It is now a pretty incredible machine.

Dave,

When I worked at Middle River Aircraft Systems I used to like to watch and talk with the boys in the stretch press department. I think we had three similar machines used to stretch the inner and outer skins for the Thrust Reverser Core Cowls that they manufacture. Just across the isle from a heat treat oven and quench tank. All the skins were 2024-T3 (0.032) either solid or perforated. Fast becoming a lost art.
