Do you think this lemans cap is still good?
I laughed pretty hard last night when I removed the lemans cap from the car and discovered what was scribed on the base with permanent marker. The top still appears to be good, but i would venture so far as to guess that the base is not useable. :3DSMILE:

FUBAR!! AH heck it's still good! What do they know?? Can you cut the base off and bolt on a new bottom? Mine was a little different than yours and that's what I did. It was a little more work but the cap was good, it just needed a new bottom. There are a couple of places here on CC that sell a new bottom.

I am reminded of the "Police" song ''Message in a bottle"
Sending out a SOS,Sending out a SOS,Sending out a SOS, tooo the worrllllddd |
Well, SOS, or should i say SOL for the parts that were installed on the car, but the body and frame are still works of art and the paint is very nice as well-minus a ding or two from where people were slamming the hood and crawling in and out of the car at Mecum. Anyway, onward and upward.
So, who sells the base? This is a two piece cap. The top simply screws on and off, or in this case, slides on and off from the base. I have not seen any vendors that sell the same type cap. |

Call Cobra Restorers, they have the two part caps and maybe they will sell you just the base. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort |
I used the part Doug described. I had to put it in a lathe and cut it down some but no big deal. Just cut the "the Fubar end" off and then use the adapter plate. I had six button head screws to hold them together. Use a little gasket material (make it) and boom your done. Matt

Ive already ordered a whole new cap from Kirkham. I was just curious who sells the base seperate.
The cap is two pieces and screws apart-no need to cut it apart. it is now on ebay with the other items. Technically, i suppose i could have just glued it together with 3M adhesive, but that is really now how i am going about this build. I might regret later from a financial standpoint, but I know its the right thing to do. |
