Wheel well lining?
What's the recommended material and adhesive to line the wheel wells so stones thrown up by the tires don't dent the body from the inside? Is it available through Mcmaster or some other source? Thanks in advance!

The fender foam rubber liners should come with your Kirkham kit. It comes with the 427 SC kit. Special type adhesive if I remember correctly. Must be appied to both surfaces. Apply it correctly the 1st time as I hear there is no 2nd chances with the adhesive.

Hey, That info was posted a while back, I think it is 3/8" foam sheets. I purchased it thru Grainger. I have a few sheets here that you are welcome to ..........and I will look for the part number.
Normal yellow bonding adhesive is used to glue the foam to the aluminum. It is a contact adhesive, so you coat both sides, wait for it to dry and then carefully apply, you do not get several chances as it sticks and stays. The glue is expensive, I have plenty here that you can have. We use the same adhesive to glue EPDM sheets of roofing ....so we buy it in 5 gal. buckets. I failed to mention, you need a small rubber roller similar to the style used to roll tile. You need to roll the foam in and make sure it adheres across the entire surface. later, karl |

Get the foam from Kirkham. I believe they use 1/2" foam and it works great.

Son of a...I just went out and looked at my pile of "carpet". Rolled up with it is a nice piece of the foam with the template lines drawn for cutting. Just need the adhesive and I'm all set. Sorry for the confusion!

Since I am going to paint mine, the liners were not installed. Now I'm itching to drive it, so they are going in and I'll have to mask around them for paint. Glad to hear they are easy to install...not! |
I lined mine (glass body) with 3/8" self adhesive foam, I've done about 600miles, and most of it has gone!:eek:

The material looks just like an exercise matt for situps etc. that you can buy at walmart. I bought the material from Kirkham for about 150.00 i believe. Weldwood contact cement from lowes is the adhesive you will want to use.

Use contact cement out of a can, or 3M Super 77 spray adhesive (easier).
Coat both the foam, and the wheelwell, let them set up for a couple of minutes...they should be tacky, not wet. Be sure you place the foam right where you want it the first time, you will not be able to remove it. Once it is where you want it, just press it down and it will be there forever. I did this myself, but it would be much easier with two people. Raise the car up if you can. I did it with the car on jackstands, ballancing one end of the sheet on one foot, while trying to position the other end with my hands. Definitely would be easier if you were a monkey or had someone else to help out. Good Luck |

Man, talk about fumes! Whew! I just finished with the main pieces, but still need a final trim on the edges and want to trim a few smaller ones to fit in a couple places where the stones will surely go if I don't. I test fit each piece and then only coated the back 2 inches or so on the fender and foam. Once I had it lined up, I pressed the rear edge into place until it bonded nicely. Did all four and then went back and coated the rest of the foam and fender, let it set up, and pressed it into place. It was a pain, but I think I did a pretty good job. We'll see if it falls out tomorrow! Thanks for all the tips, folks, I appreciate it!

I have to apply wheel well foam on a Kirkham. What is the best adhesive to use.

For a awkward fitting. It's sometimes easier to do it in halves. That way you place the dry side exactly in the position it needs to be then unroll the sticky side and apply pressure. Then lift of the unsticky side and spray both surfaces, wait to be as tacky as my last girlfriend and apply from the centre out. JD
