Kirkham Current Throttle Linkage
 
Need a picture of one mounted. Has two mounts. One on the foot box and the other (intake manifold?). How much tension is the end spring supposed to have. I have a Barry Grant Carb on a Performer RPM FE manifold.

I believe the spring he is referring to is the one that goes on the cross shaft. I believe it goes between the upright that connects to the pedal and bracket on the footbox. That way it remains in a constant relation to the carb but offers flexibility when the motor torques over.

On my Kirkham, I have springs on actually both ends of the shaft against the two bellcranks. As far as tension, let me suggest that you set the tension just firm enough for the retaining washer to keep the cotter pin from falling out. This is really not much compression as you can see, but you really don't need any. What you want to accomplish is taking side slack out of the cross shaft while giving it a bit of lateral "give" under pressure.

You have everything you need....the second spring on the shaft is optional.

A piece of advice when you mount the vertical heim joint tab on the top of your footbox: Be sure to use a piece of steel plate that is roughly the same size of the tab for a backing plate for the tab. Doesn't have to be as thick, but the idea is for it to spread the stresses on the relatively thin walls of the fiberglass as evenly as possible. This particular mounting point takes a lot of abuse from the throttle mech, and it needs to be done very carefully. I even went as far as to fashion a thin rubber gasket on the reverse (interior). This gives you a tiny bit of "give" and takes some of the pressure off the fiberglass wall.

Thanks Bud Man,

I have a small aluminum rectangular plate but I was thinking of a bigger plate (surface area) so to not fracture the glass. I might cut a 3" round (thin) stainless steel plate and e-glass it to the bottom of the footbox and add a 2" round ss plate on top.
