David: Regarding the light, small diameter clutch. Great idea!
I used to autoX a nice Datsun 510. I switched to a 7" single disc Tilton Road Race type clutch & small diameter flywheel and the engine RPM'D scarey fast. It increased the acceleration dramatically but had a very unforgiving manner regarding slippage. It was like a light switch, disengaged or fully engaged. Did not like being slipped, consequently very little town driving. Garage & trailer Queen. The idea is good but it would need to be multi disc to absorb the torque & allow some slippage. Tilton makes a setup like you describe. Rick |

That is exactly what we are after--a fast reving engine. I really love them when the rev so quickly. I spent quite a bit of time talking to McLeod about the slippage and street driving issue and they have developed this set up for the Saleen S-7 so I hope it works. I will let you know! One question: are the small blocks 289s or larger. It is possible to build a 460 cid small block. It is also possible to build a 375 cid with an 8.2" deck height. And if you are willing to spend money on the engine (Ti or piston guided rods, lightweight crank, lightweight pistons, solid roller/shaft rockers, timing belt, etc.) these can rev to over 8000rpm. I understand that someone is building a car (different brand I believe) with a 700hp Roush 427 small block. Thanks, David |

289s and 427s are the stuff dreams are made of. Each has their own pros and cons... and each their followers. I absolutely love the high-revving crackle of a highly-tuned small block. I heard a genuine race-prepared slab side once outside Coys in South Kensington, London, across the road from my old University. Unreal! But the sound of a 428 FE-powered 427 at the last ever Crystal Palace Sprint in 2000, just sat in the car park, breathing through side pipes, will live with me forever. I still think that is the way I will go, one day, when I can afford a Kirkham. (Nothing else enters my serious considerations!) Of course, I could be persuaded... :LOL: CB :cool: |

The 289 FIA car is just so much better looking than the 427 to me not to mention the racing heritage of the FIA cars. It has little to do with the engine for me.
