TKO Transmiission

Seems like about half of you guys are using the TKO.
I have 427SO with MR heads- jag rear with 3:54's and power lock.
Is the TKO first gear like a "granni" low or is it OK? I know the .82 OD will be beautiful, but. Seems like the CR toploader w/ the 2.32 first is better.

I know nothing about the Top Loader, other than it is a 4 speed that came in the original Cobra.

I choose the TKO600R, because I wanted a new transmission (I don't think they make top loaders anymore, do they?) and a 5 speed.

Here is some interesting info On the TKO's:

The TKO can handle MORE torque??
Thats the first time I heard that one, the toploader is a very strong gearbox and if you compare the problems noted by users between the two the 600 still seems to have issues with some folks. The "old timers" I hang with keep preaching to me how reliable the toploader is.
Which first gear of the toploader are you saying the Tremec is superior to, the close ratio or the wide rato model?
The specs and graph links listed in the previous thread for Tremec are very nice, I don't see how any of them show a superiority over the toploader.

Why choose TKO? The TKO is more modern (advantage? Better shifting? Shorter Throw?)and has a 5th gear.

I corrected my wording above.

I am unclear as to how you can make the above observations when you claim to know nothing of the toploader.....the thread started off asking for some basic comparisons between a TL and the 600, nothing was mentioned about comparing the 600 to the 500...you will also find more than a few toploader users taking issue with better shifting shorter throw observations.
This is turning into a lesson in confusion, sorry about the side track bigboss.

Deleted Reply and adjusted first response due to Lineslinger's comments. Thanks for pointing out that I was not being clear. It was not my intention. I just wanted to share the information I gathered on the Tremec.

TKO first gear

The first gear in mine is tall and propells the car at a speed a little higher than you would expect based on comparison to a normal new car. You would have trouble moving slow without geting a workout on the clutch pedal. I have 3.42 gears in the diff.

The TKO600's 1st gear is 2.87, which in my opinion isn't too low. I like the way the TKO shifts and you can't beat the o.d. for cruising. I think with your gearing choice the .82 will work out great in your application. I have installed tons of these in Cobras and I have never really heard of first being considered too low, now the TKO500 has a 1st gear ratio of 3.27 and in my opinion it is too low to be useful. If you would like anymore info on the TKO series let me know and I will post exact specs. on them. Hope I could be of some assistance. jimig@standardtransmission.com

An added note, I have a 600. I found it very easy to call Jimi and tell him what my setup was and let him suggest changes that made putting the 600 in my car very easy. He also had a great price in comparison to some of the prices in posts/threads I have since read. I would recommend Jimi for a 600 and David Kee for a toploader.

Mark, Hey, how are you?

I had a toploader. I got the 600 because of the OD. With the gear I was running, I needed something to bring me back to reality. The toploader was fine, but it did not have an OD.

Just my $0.02 :D :D
