Knock Off Hammer
I just came across these nylon hammers. I have not seen them for sale for some time. The advantage to a nylon hammer is that when you miss the wing nut you do not damage the rim. You will still need a lead (or brass) hammer for when the wing nuts are on real tight.

Tom: Deadblows work well in this respect and without the need for a lead hammer, but I destroyed a SnapOn using it in this manner. I guess it was because of the small area impacted on the wing nut.

The weight of the hammer is not listed. Unless the heads were filled with lead, I would not be comfortable ONLY using these to tighten a knock-off, especially a short two ear knock-off. ;)

What size safety wire pliers should be used? They sell several different lengths. And what gauge amd material type (stainless, steel, aluminum, etc) wire should be used?

I called Summit Racing and they told me the shipping weight on that hammer is 1 pound. . . .seems light. I believe we need a 5 pound hammer, isn't that right?

Harbor freight has everything you need for the wheels. I bought the twist plyers, hammer, and stainless safety wire from them. It's good enough for recreational use.

I bought my first lead hammer from one of the Good Guy shows. I trashed that one and just bought another 4lb replacable head hammer from Mc Masters. They ship thier stuff right out. They have great prices on stainless products( bolts, nuts, clamps, ect).
I have missed and hit my wheels with the lead hammer and it didn't leave any marks. Also, you should remove them with the lead hammer and reinstall them with the dead blow hammer. Scott |

My friend showed me his method (CSX8000, wire wheels, knock offs). He uses a block of wood and a heavy steel hammer. I've been using that method myself ever since. Used it recently on an Austin Healey, guess it would mess things up if you miss, so I don't! :D
