How much work is needed to paint a Kirkham?

Have any of you painted your cars yourself? Is it pretty much prime block and paint? I'm trying to decided brushed alum or painted

Depends on the quality level of the finished job that you want; i.e., paint it like a race car...or paint it like a show car. ;)

I have not done it yet, but will be painting my car. But, I think it's easier than most modern full-bodied cars.

Overall sanding to remove deep file marks.
Surface primer
Skim coat of bondo and sand, sand, sand
Primer.
Color coat(s)

The masking job is easier than most cars... the doors, hood and trunk get hung on the clothesline.
For an S/C, the color only goes on the outer body, so no worry about underbody coverage.

My painter was very impressed with the body and had to do less prep work than he expected. The amount of work involved with painting a Kirkham really comes with stripping the car down and building it back up again. If you want it painted right, then you need to strip the car down to the body and frame. This is where the larger amount of work comes in but it is really not too bad.

Here are some pictures from my Kirkham paint process. More in my gallery.

Paint it before installing the carpets.
