Has anyone used a Sidewinder in a Kirkham?
I have a tunnel port intake to trade. An FE forum member is interested in trading for a nice sidewinder. Will it fit?
|
Are you planning on going to the side?
They were designed to do just that on circle tracks. Comp 427's used a straight up 4bbl m/r manifold. |
Weren't they designed to better equalize runner length? That's how they were marketed in the hi-performance parts catalog.

That is what I am using. It is what all the real MR always had.

big-boss Do you have a pic of the manifold on your car? Does it fit with the turkey pan? What is one worth these days the tp is around $600

Mine is not mounted yet, two to three weeks out I hope. It looks just like the one ng8... posted. It really is not that much off. The TP would probabbly be worth more but would take longer to sell at a good price. If the sidewinder is cherry? 600 is OK one the high side but oK. I saw a cherry TP go for 1100 bucks couple of months ago on EBAY I do believe it was NOS. The SW is defenetly not the best manifold out there but does have a cool factor not in a new Edelbrock or blue thunder or whatever else.
My engine will be fairly mild that is why I want the SW plus I have had it for years and paid jack for it on Ebay. Good luck. |
Sw
The sidewinder was a 1966 and did not come on any 427 Cobra's S/C's or Comps that I know about. If you check the hoodscoop cutouts on original cars, they were all off 1 inch from center. The sidewinder would bring it back to center but wouldn't match up with the hood cut out.

The sidewinder is not the correct intake for a Cobra, although it looks the part fine, other than the carb offset. From what I've gathered over the years, many people believe the sidewinder was stock, because a lot of Cobras had their original magnesium MR intakes swapped for them early on. This was because you can't run coolant through a magnesium intake, so many people switched to the aluminum sidewinder, because it's what Ford was offering at the time for a replacement intake.
I believe, as Steve mentioned, the Sidewinder was designed for NASCAR type racing. |
So it won't line up with the hood scoop but the blue thunder will?

There you guys go again, making my fat dumb and happy life a living hell- that is my wifes' job thank you.
Anyway, Will my sidwinder with the Kirkham hood opening on my 427 S/O painted black fit? |
Engine is offset
I know I had to shoehorn my aircleaner in on mine. Victor Jr. intake. I discovered in speaking to the Kirkhams that the engine is offset 1/2" to the passenger side. You can modify the base of your aircleaner to compensate. Also I found by changing the motor mounts from the original style that the Kirkhams supplied to an aluminium saddle design they make I was able to lower my motor 1/2".
