New (to me) spinner lock
I didn't notice these till yesterday... The button is spring loaded. I'm not sure how wobbly the tire would be as it seems to let the spinner back off about 1/16" from the hub, but it would stop it from flying off.

The anal side of me wants to put the safety wire on as well. I also finally posted the delivery pics in my gallery... |
Ronbo, what about machining an aluminum washer (cut one out of .063" sheet 6061 T-6) to take up the "slop"between the button and the wheel?
|
Man you guys worry too much.
Keep them clean, use never-sieze and a snap-on dead blow and you will never have a problem. The wire will not keep it tight anyway. The wire just tells you if is moving. You put the wire on with a little slack and if it is tight during the pre-flight- need to do something. I have the new pin thing it took a while to get used to them but now I am OK.. |
Ya, Joe basically told me there was no need to use the wire. There would have to be some gap to allow for variances in the wheels. A 1/16" wobble at the hub would likely be around 1/2" of movement at the tread face though.
I'll try knocking the spinner back and see how much the wheel shifts. Can't say I agree with your view of the safety wire though, if done correctly it will keep it tight. (but this has been hashed out in another thread) |
The first Cobra I ever saw in person (1966 - Misquamicut Beach, RI) had safety wire. 35 years later I finally got my very own snake and I can assure you it's gonna have safety wire! Why not just go with lug wheels?

I believe the Kirkham folks mentioned to me that the spring loaded pin and hardened hubs come from Formula 1. If it is good enough for them, good enough for me!

Nothing wrong with "belt and suspenders" plus the safety wire looks good/racey/macho.
